extra media for emp. 400

My thoughs on the Emp 280/400 along with all the bio wheel filters, is that they are lacking in mechanical filtration while having superb bio filtration. I would look more into adding more media to increase the mechanical filtration.

I use Ehiems Substrat in a couple of cannisters and seem to have good success. You can get the 1 litre size at Petsmart for 16.99 and they have free shipping over 50 dollars. So I just stocked up on specific filter media all at once usually lol, to meet the 50 dollar requirement.

I use biomax from Aquaclears in my Emp. 400. I also use a thin layer in my Eheim 2215 for the first layer then bio balls next.

I use ehiem substrate pro in my FX5. I use 2L's...

It seems to work well.
