I went ahead and got those mystery pikes from John (snookn21). Got three of them and a johanna, don't ask.

I've already made up my mind mostly as to what they are, but curious on your thoughts. Needless to say so far I am happy I took a risk.

They are still ridiculously skittish, and I just moved them to the 125gal, so pictures will be more difficult to obtain, but here are two I shot while they were in the 30gal quarantine that I took about a week or so ago. Still hard to photograph though as you can tell.

Little info on them: They came from the Rio Negro.

Nice pick ups. I wondered who had snagged those. I looked at those guys pretty hard when I got my Lents from John. The lents I got were very skittish for about a week or 2 as well. Now they ram the front of the tank when I walk by wanting food so it won't take long for you new ones to settle in.

As for what they are, I'll let someone with more creni knowledge figure that out. I thought they were some variety of vens but coming from the rio negro pretty much rules that out.

Coming from the Rio Negro I'm pretty sure they are not Vennies.

That's that bad side of Crenicichla keeping. So many of the Lugubris species look identical when young and if you don't know where they were collected everything gets tagged with the Venny label.

I'll wait for maturity to say what they are.

Jer, those look suprisingly close to what I got when I thought I was buying marms. I don't know alot about collection locations, but could they be what I have?

Clint ~ Glad you spoke up!!! I was actually thinking along the same lines. There are few other options they might be as well.

Like Scat said, maturity will remove all doubt. I have a few guesses, but they are very timid guesses.

BTW...we need some ventral fin shots of vennies. These guys have clear ventral fins with the outer edge rimmed in a red and white stripe. Pretty much the same way marms, lents, and tapajos have theirs. Don't remember seeing that trait on vennies, could very well be wrong though. I wish I could get a picture of it to show what I am talking about. They refuse to make photography easy for me. Suppose I could 10gal then to take a pictures, but then they would be stressed. :(

Well, you're one of the experts, so if you don't think they are Vens, they are probably not. I'll look forward to seeing how they turn out!
