NEVER use chemicals to change your PH rays are extreamly sensitive to ph swings. Do the water change and keep doing one every day for the next 3 days.

Ahhh, as a novice, I didn't know that. I asked what my LFS pH level was, and they told about about 7.0. The lady that fills in for the owners son, who I'm friends with, said "here, I'll see what it's at right now." she tested in and was like: "OMG, its too high." and through ina couple scoops of baking soda.
I love my ray, hes the only thing in my tank, I usually do 40% water changed every week, and take all the decor out, carbon out (replace it), and filter media out, and rinse it all to get all the crap off of them, as I know these guys need to have really clean water, and tanks.

Ya I would not ad anything to the tank but something like Genesis to remove the chlorine, and salt if you have a sick or injured ray. Our water here in WA is fine. I think mine sits at about 7.5-8 normally. It's been so long since I've tested it. I would also alternate your media rinsing with your water changes, not at the same time. Rays like clean water but you dont want to be taking all the bio out.
How big is your tank and what kind of filtration?

I agree with Cowgirl; Try to alternate with your cleanings; I do a 50% wc once per week; I have two canister filters and a giant custom wet/dry system; This is typically what my schedule looks like: 50% wc & clean filter #1, 50% wc & vacuum gravel, 50% wc & clean filter #2, then repeat; That way you're not disrupting the bacteria too much; my ph now resides at around 6.5 or so; Here in western Wa our water is soft so that coupled with my ray my ph used to dive down to the fives; I now hang a bag of crushed coral in the overflow which has stabilized my ph at about 6.5; tap is 7.0 over here; I never use chemicals in my tank; Good luck with your ray, they are one the most graceful and beautiful creatures you can have in your aquarium!
So after the routine water changes, he still seems really agitated. Ive seen him a few times swim mid-water and flash as if something is bothering him. He also will swim along the bottom and curl his fins upward and flash them back as if he's trying to get something off of him. It doesnt seem like hes swimming much on the artificial coral anymore, which I thought was a good sign. At the same time as adding the pH downer I noticed he didn't bury in the sand at all. Now it seems like hes doing it again. The flashing and curling of the fins still concerns me. should I keep doing water changes? Should I swap the carbon out again? Any additional help is much appreciated!
hope all goes well. i dont add anything to the water but prime. im on well water. hope the ray does better. im not far from u, im in arlington up near darrington. u enjoying the cold lol

pH spikes can be deadly for your rays, notice for discolouration around the skirt area. the most i think you can do is do a slight water change everyday and hope it balances out, adding more chemicals in will only make it worse. and pump more bubbles in to help de-stress the ray a little.
