Thanks for all the comments.

Thanks for the clarification also Fishfarm. Nice to know why the young female looked so different.

Correct me if im wrong but HRP's are slightly different lookwise than convicts. HRP's are a little less aggressive, get more bluish colors, males have red points which are washed out in my pics. Also seems females get a yellowish belly instead of the deep red seen in female convicts. Im sure there are lots more differences that someone else will fill ya in on. Stripe count may be different as well, not sure on that, and also possibly the spinal count.

sorry to highjack your thread but after seeing those HRP's i think my female con is a pure instead of a HRPxConvict hybrid...what do you guys thnk?

HRP are a different undiscribed speices of Crytoheros (Amtitlantia), Convicts are Cryptoheros (Amtitlantia) nigrofasiatus. Mitch Tobler is doing research in Honduras right now to collect DNA from as many locations as possible to sort this all out. I spoke with him right before he left and gave him all the locations we have collected HRP, nigrofasiatus, cutteri and spilurm.
Convict 94, your fish looks like a HRP, but if it was sold to you as a hybrid it most likely is. Ken

Thanks Fishfarm, very informative. Keep us posted on Mitch's findings

no tj im pretty sure its a hybrid. but like i said in a pm ill send you two pure breed hrps

Well i woke up this smorning and found the male visciously guarding the eggs while the female is fanning them. I will get some pics up later today. It looks like a small batch of say 60eggs, but she is still pretty small. I was very surprised to see the male chasing my Vieja and my Dempseys away.

Now has anyone just let the parents raise the babies and had success without having to brew up some baby brine shrimp? Any other experiences on raising the fry I would love to hear.

Thanks.

HRP have small spawns, If they had 200 eggs you'd know they were Nigrofasiatus or a hybrid. The fry are pretty easy to rasie. I have a tank on my desk at work and has nothing but Rio Monga Red Points and they spawn all the time and a few fry from each spawn manage to survive just on flake food. Ken

My Rio Mongo HRP have had four very small spawns since I got them a few weeks ago. The parents seem able to take care of the fry, but most end up getting picked off by their tankmates since the HRP are so small. I always enjoy seeing the little tiny one inch HRP square off against my four inch Herichthys tamasopoensis, because the HRP usually win! Currently my pair is guarding a few free swimming fry, and when they get eaten, the female will probably lay another batch of eggs in a couple days by the looks of her belly.
