F1 Labiatus from Rapps

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Both neets or convicts will provide something for the labiatus to defend against. The only sure fire way to make sure the male doesn't kill the female is to keep them divided. I'm only speaking from my experience with the specific fish I've kept, but I've lost plenty of female New World cichlids to violence from the male. They seem fine for months, even years, then one day, he snaps and she is dead.

Good luck with them.

I would go ahead and give the convicts a go. If it doesn't work out, get rid of them, the key is to always be observant and keep a close eye as things can change in a split second, but as long as you have a divider always on hand and your ready in case something happens, give it a shot.

My preference would be to keep them alone. Only reason I am considering adding something is because I heard it may help them keep their pair bond

it will for sure, i would do it until they have a few spawns under their belt and the bond is stronger. if its a 125 i would go ahead and throw in some convicts, however long term, i like silver dollars too. Although they dont give a threat and reason to defend like the other cichlids, they can give the male something to keep his mind on. so all in all, i would get some convicts in there with them until they have spawned a few times and are better suited with eachother. then throw in some silver dollars for the long haul.

Interesting. Do you think any other cichlids besides Convicts would work?
