I have a two month old, 2 1/2 inch fahaka. Got her when she was about half an inch. She was eating regular shrimp cut of mussels and blood worms. She start eating the pellets I put in for the other fish. She seems to prefer pellets to the other foods. Other than dentistry, is there any problem with feeding mainly pellets?

I know the swordtails platies and other live bears will not be able to live with her. So far she is tolerating them. Not really sure what is a he or she but I colour she. Thanks for your help.

Technically nothing wrong with it eating pellets as long as they have a high enough protein amount that a puffer should be getting. Congrats! It’s usually near impossible to get a puffer to look in the direction of a pellet!
I’m sure as it grows it will decide it likes shrimp and snails more though.

She still eats everything else. Even feed live marmokreb babies occasionally when I can catch them in the cray tank. I would feed chopped up seafood and pellets and she would eat both. She did not like pellets until now. Not a picky eater… knock on wood.

I've trained different species of puffers on to pellets yrs ago, as long as the pellets are of decent quality it's all good.

Any particular tricks I should know? Would be nice to see my amazons go after pellets every now and then, just for a more well rounded diet.

Mine did not eat pellets initially. But when I started feeding the others, it got her excited and get a feeding response. First time she spit them out. Now she just gobbles them up.

Thanks neil! Nice to see ur still here. Still keeping fish but just one tank now.

Jonah! I didn’t recognize your ID. Hey good to see you still in the hobby too. I hope that you are doing well, and staying safe.

my favourite trick for pellet training picky fish has always been presoaking the pellets in the juice from frozen bloodworms, and only feeding once in AM, after the lights have been on for an hour or two. No other food offered. Most fish eventually give in, but not always. Some fish simply refuse to eat anything but fresh/frozen, to the point of starvation when they are forced.

Hey neil. Have u heard of krill causing lockjaw in freshwater puffers? Just noticed the pellet I used have Antarctic krill as first ingredient. What’s ur thought on this?
