Fahaka or Avacado?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Given me food for thought.. Hubby and I have decided to wait until out tax check comes in to decide if a Fahaka is going to work. I've bought enough fish in the past that needed much larger tanks then I ever thought. don't want to add another we won't be prepared for. and a few extra days to think about it is never a bad idea.

None of those puffers should be housed together, ever.

Avocados are too small to be with MBUs, even if the MBUs are housed properly which I am sure they are not.

And Fig 8 are brackish water, not FW as the avocados are.

Your puffers are juveniles and have not fully matured into their nature aggressive selves, give them time.

my fig 8s were fine in FW. Never had any issues.

They are not FW fish, so whatever argument you have for them being in FW is irrelevant. They are BW fish, period. I did not make that up. They belong in BW the same way that tangs belong in SW.

They can survive FW for a short while, but not thrive. Did your F8s live the decade + that they are supposed to live in your FW tank? Have you had them that long? If not then you have absolutely no LEGITIMATE proof or fact that they thrived in FW for their full life expectancy. Thus you simply stating "My F8s where fine in FW" does not stand up to the studies proving that these fish are BW fish.

yaya for de-railing... Anyways.. i think we're going to take the plunge and buy the Fahaka if he's still there today. I have a 20H or a 20L or a 37T I can start him in. I have a filter atm on another tank thats been cycled for awhile now that I can move to any of these tanks?... I am thinking the 20L or 37T for footprint? any suggestions for decor? I have about 1/2" of sand amount to put into the tank, and some random peice of driftwood I can gank from my other tank. also some PVC pipeing? What would be best?

Do you have one in mind? If he's only 1" or 2", the tanks you have will house him for a couple of months.

^ Completely agree with PP although i would choose which ever tank has a longer foot print?

Also, better start planning the upgrade pretty much as soon as you get your Fahaka, coz you'll be surprised at just how fast they can grow...

Yep! atm he's in a 10gal QT to make sure he gets to eating. the filter is rated for a 40 and as soon as I can get the sand settled, the filter and him will be xfered. I also have a 55 in storage atm I can use if need be. and a few other fish in a 75 that will be upgraded in the next few monthes. otherise the hubby says I can use some of our tax money to buy another 75 if need be, though I may just try and find a 120w or 125 used instead right away.

I have snails, frozen blooworms, frozen krill, and live black worms. Anything else I should add to his diet? I also have NLS pellets that I want to try, they are pretty hard so I thought these might be good for his teeth?

and ATM he's maybe 2".. tiny guy but he's been eating good at work.

^ You could also try de-frosted mussels, and prawns from the supermarket... i personally managed to get my fahaka onto NLS Pellets, although i was kinda lucky since i was feeding some inverts shrimp pellets and discovered my fahaka didn't mind them...

From then on, if it was a sinking pellet, my fahaka would take it without too much fuss...

-EDIT-

I also agree it would be a good idea to get the 125G setup straight from the start, coz then you save yourself a lot of trouble constantly moving a large puffer from tank to tank as it grows...

Thanks for the help guys! That link answered alot of my questions about feeding PP! I've seen mixed things.. but from the link decided on one thing.. the 10 gallon he's currently in will become a tank for a self-cloneing crayfish, I'm sure my spiney eels would appreciate the babies as snacks as well. one other question that I htink I saw mentioned before but figured I'de ask and know 100% are MTS's safe snails to offer?
