Fahaka Puffer Quesiton

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
WOW thx for all the info guys :) might pick a 2" up at my LFS tomorrow and is 20 bucks for it a good deal?

It is tottally fresh water.

Meanest Puffer ( and one of the meanest fish ) there is.

A very interesting fish, relates with its owner like a dog, will get to know you and follow you around when you're near the tank.

Feed it fish, mussles, shrimp, snails ( with shell, mind, because of the need to trim its teeth )

It needs to have a tank for itself, never less than 125 gallons I woiuld say.

Enjoy. It is an awesome fish and a committment for a lot of years.

I paid $20 for mine about 8 years ago--just a 1" speck of a fella, head & tail. It was treated for IPs & is a thick 12" puffer & friend now. (He's looking over my shoulder as I type this.)

You are incorrect & so is that site. Don't always trust a site trying to sell their fish, for proper care.
The Fahaka Puffer, also known as the Nile Puffer or Band Puffer, comes from the freshwater lakes and rivers of Africa and can grow to a very large size.
What SG were you keeping your fahaka at & what happened to it?

i dont just listen to a site. i used it as a reference. this first puffer i donated because i was mislead about its size when i first got into keeping them. At the time i had a 30 gal tank. my current fahaka is in a 75 gal, by himself, and the specific gravity is kept at 1.003 -1.008. Ive actually been considering moving him to mid-range brackish (specific gravity 1.009 - 1.015), but he seems fine.
Before i started going brackish with my first puffer, he kept getting sick with things like ich and fin rot, and it wasnt due to poor water conditions.
So whether im incorrect or not, the method that ive learned from Dr. Klaus Ebert's book, "The Puffers of Fresh and Brackish Waters", is working better than when i left him fw.
So when someone ask if the Fahaka is fw or bw ,im gonna tell them brackish.

the thing is the nile is one of 2 rivers flowing north into a large body being fresh water as they run inland out. your fish may have done fine. good job but they do not come frome brackish waters naturally

I've never had ich or fin rot on my puffer in the 8 years I've had him & he's always been in FW. Your fish, do what you want but IMO, this is bad advise to give others.
