Fahaka Puffer Quesiton

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are 2 species that are mostly found in FW but often visit BW but do best kept in BW in captivity: The F8 (T biocellatus) & Redline (T erythrotaenia). The GSP is rarely found in the ocean but many of us keep it in marine conditions in captivity with good longevity.

Throught the 10+ years of running The Puffer Forum, myself & many others have found some mistakes in Dr Ebert's book & found methods that work better for us. Although we do still refer to his book for many IDs, I think the all years of practical pufferkeeping experience combined at TPF can at times, superceed what we have read in that book.

*Edit* As I read the T lineatus profile in the Ebert book, he states this is a freshwater puffer. So I don't know where you got in his book it is BW.

We are always open to new things in the fishkeeping hobby. Good luck keeping your fahaka long term in BW/high-end BW (or at any SG for a long period off time, since a FW fish can't regulate the osmotic pressure in salty water) & even better luck keeping it in a 75g tank.

They arent the biggest they are the seccond biggest and i would say a 4x2x2 would be a minimum preferibly a 6x2x2 although they dont get much over 14" in captivity.
Also they are a true freshwater species so NO SALT!!!!

the thing is the nile is one of 2 rivers flowing north into a large body being fresh water as they run inland out. your fish may have done fine. good job but they do not come frome brackish waters naturally
i never said they came from brackish. to each his own.
obviously, there are differing ways of caring for a fish. they key to its survival in whatever conditions that its in, is to put it there gradually.

Please tell me where Ebert's book says they're ok in BW?

If some website says that a certain fish is FW, you will likely find another saying it is brackish and a third saying marine. Pick your experts with care. I won't say bad things about the several hobby sites as there is a lot of useful info on these, but they are not all well researched or authoritative and many do have glaring errors that may sit uncomfortably side by side with excellent advice. The novice cannot be expected to tell the difference between the wheat and the chaff on such sites.

i refuse to beat a dead horse. i do what works for me, and if it works and some1 else asks. I let them know what i did. Its up to them to decide on whether or not to use the advice.

I pride TPF in collecting together the top long-term pufferkeepers in the world. We also have Mentors there, such as Dr Neale Monks, Kelly Jedlicki & many other folks who work on the Crew at WetWeb Media, along with myself.

I'm still waiting for where I can find info from Dr Ebert's book about them being in BW?

Only because of misinformation, that I don't want perpetuated.
