Fair asking price for tank setup?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's tricky not getting robbed but selling a tank for what it's worth WON'T happen. It comes down to how fast you want to sell it. If you can take your time wait for a decent offer if not -yeah 500.00 or so

Most largish (100-150) gal tanks lose a large chunk of their value the minute they leave the store, kind of like new cars off the lot.
Most of the used 100 to 150 gallon tanks I've picked up, for around $100-$125.
In many cases if you get $1 per gal, that's lucky.
There was a 330 gal tank on a local Craigs list here in Panama for $300.
When I moved I ended up selling my 150 for $50, and giving away all tanks under 75 gallons, think I got $20 each for the 75s, and threw in the stands, lights, pumps etc etc for nothing, just to get them out in time for the move.
I had stuff for sale here on MFK, on local Craigs list, and with members of my local aquarium club for months, hardly any takers.
Hope you have better luck than I did.

I've seen nice set ups worth about 3k sell for 3k just post all over the place and put a ad in the paper and wait

PT Barnum had some pretty decent quotes on that sort of thing...
You MIGHT find someone willing to spend that kind of money on used equipment. Then they might go on to a site like MFK to brag about their sweet set up they just picked up...Sound familiar yet?
-Actually I remember some rather insensitive comments here directed recently at a few ridiculously expensive tanks.
MFKers were real quick to mention how they were straight robbed and even offered up examples of cheaper brand new and DIY alternatives.

;) Can't remember the members name exactly...

I just picked up a 125 Saturday with stand and canopy, 2 canisters, circulation pumps, heater, programmable led, ton of wood, rocks, and substrate for $175. All in great shape.

A few months ago I picked up a 125 with stand canopy, 2 AC hob filters, air and circulation pumps, and a bunch of misc. stuff for $225 was in good condition not great.

I would ask $400 and expect $250-300, or drop it down for quick sale.

I guess I really depends on the stand and canopy and how nice of it's all custom like mine or bought online and shipped in a box etc
Id say it's mainly how quality it is. Tanks never hold the same worth. Once you set it up, it's already down in price because it's been "used" I've seen large tanks (over 500) gallons for sale for quite a while. 1. Asking tons of money, 2. Most people don't have space

I'd need to see pics of it maybe 1,200 I payed 5k for my 90g set up but that's a 2k cherry stand and canopy too
I have zero experience in woodworks/glasswork or building stuff other than maybe a wooden planter for my wife, but for 5k I will build you a 90G tank with a Michelangelo quality stand.
a 120G tank and stand set up shouldn't be more than 400. A little research comes a long way I found a tank maker for a brand new 225G WIDE tank and stand for less than 1,200. I'm assuming brand new a 120g shouldn't be more than 600-700 bucks with a stand
