fastest growing cichlids

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
There are over a dozen Pike species from S America that grow well over a foot.
I believe some of the Chaetobranchine cichlids are near or over, and so do the genus Caquetaia, Hoplarchus and Hypselecara. There are probably more I can't recall at the moment.

He said South American. Umbees and Red Devils are Central American. Flowerhorns don't occur naturally anywhere, they're not real fish.
seems to me if it's got gills, fins, and lives underwater, a flowerhorn would qualify as a 'real fish'

It's a fish but not a naturally occuring one though. One might be made up of mostly Trimac and it will grow fast. Another might be more Festae and grow very slowly. You can't catagorize a FH as a SA and say it will definitely grow fast or slow.

Sure it's a fish, but it isn't a South American cichlid. Flowerhorns are not a species, so technically they aren't part of the cichlidae family :)

sorry didn't see the south american part

In my experience GT was the fastest, he grew a bit over 16cm in 9-10 months(in the past), presently I have a severum at age just over a year old and is about 13cm(could hav done much better, coz it has always been bullied by larger guys, which are now removed) big and my convict about one and a half year old is bout 12cm. So what do you reckon about this growth rate?

geeez it has to be oscars, i purchase a 1 1/2 inch oscar and a 1 1/2 inch frontosa (for the grow out tank) both the same size in a month this oscar has more than doubled the frontosa its leaving him in the dust... wow, picked up two tiny flowerhorns and i was concerned the oscar would try to eat them so i took a chance and i was actually able to put the oscar in the large tank with very little problems, he is adjusting well and i swear he just grew as i typed this... lol

To op oscars are very fast growers to everyone else caquetaia umbrifera (umbee) is considered sa although im sire there is some overlap. Green terrors are notorious for slow growth. Dovii are ca. And frontosa ate african... Peace out

Oh and flowerhorns are neither ca or sa however they are bred from mainly ca stock
