for the tilapia: can I buy frozen or does it have to be fresh?
night crawlers and worms: can I go dig them up straight out of the backyard? or should they be purchased from a bait store?

Walmart has pretty decent prices on frozen tilapia. I have been getting mine from Grocery outlet at just a slightly better price.

As regards bait worms, the price compared to the tilapia is really high. More bang for the buck with the tilapia.

For a little variety I use frozen silversides and krill but cost on these is high compared to the tilapia also.

Finally got some tilapia. Cut it up into small pieces and thawed one small cube in aquarium water, just like you guys said. My ornate ate it and I was super excited about it!

Sometimes I feed mine a cut up piece of whiting, they may or may not eat krill.

I believe silverside are from saltwater, i dont really give them silverside cause it cost about $13 one bag and that bag is only two feeding to my bichirs, but i do an alternate fish which is frozen anchovies or smelt. Just cut it small but since my bichirs are big now i feed the whole fish.

I believe it was DMD123 that mentioned you can feed the frozen cod. Someone said you can feed them salmon too, i havent tried both so i dont know the result.

I bought cod and the fish did not like it as much as tilapia.

They might like swaii? it's also white and flaky. and a lot cheaper than tilapia. Probably not as nutrient dense though.
