Live in Texas now, but spent the first 27 of my 29 years in Alaska. Been in the guiding industry there since I was 14. Halibut, monster halibut, are tough to beat. 326# was the biggest I put a client on. Countless 150 lbs. Good for bragging rights, but a lot of work to bring in.
For pure fun, the best is King Salmon a 40 pounder will stip 300 yrds off 30 lb gear in a heart beat. I'm fresh ocean Chinook here, not the golden slugs they catch in the fresh. Man I miss it up there. Shark fishing (salmon shark) was awsome aswell. Big tasty beasts that got to be over 300 lbs.
My texas biggest is a 3 lb bass caught on my kids cane rod in Herman Park, or maybe a 24" bowfin (want one in the house) pulled out of the Buffalo Bayou. Need to find the time to go slay a bull red.
