does the endlicheri endlicheri or the endlicheri congicus have taller spines? ive seen pictures of a "saddled bichir" with very long beautiful spines, im trying to figure out which of these 2 is the one im seeing

the endi congicus is supposed to be the zaire green, the big daddy of the bichirs.
endlicheri congicus and zaire green are two different bichirs. the common name of endli congicus is "congo bichir". zaire green is the common name (or trade name) of a yet undescribed species called Polypterus sp. 'Congo' given by the author of the aqualog polypterus book

"saddled bichir" is the common name of endlicheri endlicheri, which is probably what you saw. i wouldn't say either one has noticeably taller dorsal finlets than the other.

the pic you saw is likely juvenile endli endli, still very small, and as it grows its body will "grow into the dorsal finlets region", if you know what i mean

Ornate, delhezi and senegal--of course I am biased towards what is currently swimming in my tank.

Truth be told-I would give my left leg for a lower jaw bicher

my favorite is the delhezi...the prettiest species are probably delhezi and ornatipinnis while the more active are the palmas polli, senegalus and delhezi. so, imo the delhezi is the best combination of looks and level of activity. :headbang2

what's the preference when it comes to endlicheri endlicheris and delhezis? does anyone know the difference between an endlicheri endlicheri and endlicheri congicus?
The first pic is an endlicheri congicus while the 2nd one is an endlicheri endlicheri.
IMO, both are sub species of p.endlicheri and the difference lies in the physical appearance.
Endlicheri congicus has lighter body clolour and fading uniform stripes....while endlicheri endlicheri has darker & more obvious stripes...in most case looks less uniform and more ''wild looking'' compared to endlicheri congicus. Thus, endlicheri endlicheri is more attractive to me IMO. :grinno:

Therefore, I would recommend endlicheri endlicheri to the thread starter too...
The stripes and body colour will be more enhanced using red quartz as sandbase and black background as well.

Cheers*

Polypterus endlicheri endlicheri is the species.
Polypterus endlicheri congicus is the subspecies of the above-Anne
