When stores ask me about what size tank I say "big enough". They seem to not be expecting that answer, and don't say anything after that.

Sorry, but if I worked in a store and I asked you that and you answered in that fashion, you'd be walking out empty handed.

i dont work in an lfs but i love it when noobs insist they are right like in an lfs by me one of the guys i know who works there had to tell this woman that an oscar would not live in a 10g and she insisted she had friends who were 'fish experts' who told her it could. Anyway she got soooooo anoyed when he wouldnt sell it to her and started ranting about how they sold poor quality clown fish which died as soon as you got them he asks her what the salinity and size of the tank are and she says "what do you mean by salinity" and he says how much salt do you put in she just looks at him really strangely and he explains about how they need salt, but she still insists that they can be acclimatised to freshwater and just leaves.

Sounds like he met my mother.

Then there's always me telling the manager- and you'd be the one walking out.

Corporate stores can't refuse to sell you something unless there is proof that you are going to do harm to/with it.

So refusal to sell could result in your last paycheck.

Well, I don't live in NY- so I'm not really concerned.

It's no ones business what size tank I have, and I have the right to purchase fish for any reason.

Next time I am going to purchase a fish and tell them it's for dinner. ;)

It's totally their business where the animals they sell are going. I don't know why you'd think otherwise. So if someone goes into a pet store and buys 20 dollars worth of fish, if their intentions are to take them home and flush them down the toilet, it's okay? What if someone comes in, buys fish, then takes them outside the store and stomps them flat on the sidewalk? You'd not do anything because it's none of their business?

I am doing my job.. what they do outside of the store premises is none of my business, not would there be anything I can do.

If I go in and say I have a 400 gallon tank, but I really have a 10 gallon tank, and I buy 4 oscars- it would be the same as me saying it's none of your business.

I have no idea what size tank the customer has, and if they don't want to tell me they are either going to not tell me, or lie about it.

I can't be a martyr and home check everyone who buys a $5 fish. The only thing you can do is believe what they tell you, or hope for the best.

I have the means to house the fish I buy, so I'm not the customer with a 10 gallon getting an oscar- so it doesn't matter if I say a word to an associate or not. I have the room.

at the store I work at if we say that we dont feel an animal is going to proper home we can refuse the sale and the managers will back us up, and it is our business what kind of setup the animal is going to regardless of the type because we are dealing with living creatures. your right, we do have to go by what they say but usually you can tell if a person is truthful and prepared to take care of said animal by the way they answer and if you choose not to tell us anything we can choose not to sell the animal.

I would say it is the stores business, it the setup is completely wrong the fish could die, and since most stores offer a waranty that would come out of the stores pocket.

wow i went into a new fish store today to check out the stock and pick up some fish food. I got into a conversation with a man who obviously thought i was a total idiot and a newb since im 15, and this 40 year old man tried flirting with me!! ewww!!!! :nilly:haha but anyways we were tlking about fish and the new species he got in yadda yadda i asked if they had any brackish puffers like figure 8s and he was like ooooh no those are pure fresh water. i was like noo and tried to explain to him they need brakish water and he kept on arguing that they were freshwater. then he tried to sell me a damsel saying he would do great with a puffer and tetras, but i had to make sure that i slowly aclimated him and to add the old water into my tank.:screwy: i asked him what fish he owned and he said rays, channel cats, aros, pbass, gar, and cichlids. We tlked and he showed me some brands of food, then...
me: what type of setups do you have?
him: they all live together in my huge tank, but there are sometimes fights but i put the fishy in time out.
me: ur tanks big? how many gallons?
him: well its a huge tank.............its 40 gallons. I keep my rays and gar in my 20 gallon and feed the gar gold fish!
:screwy:
me: wow thats a.....small tank for these fish?
him: o its ok they grow to the size of the tank:WHOA:
Me: (staring at him like hes insane)
him: hey i hav some peacock eels and oscars that i am selling, they will go great in a 10 gallon, we hav a 10 gallon on sale too!
:ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL::ROFL:
