favorite M heckelii had fast death, no explanation

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Jim, wow thanks for the info! I've never heard a peep about this before. I do see more risk for shock in your 2 examples, but they still may show a vulnerability in heckelii.
He might've gotten more krill than he could 'handle' that night. I saw no blockage in his throat, but he was greedy during my BGK feedings, which recently started taking krill from me at the surface. I targeted the ghost's mouth & tried not to let Bubba get big pieces, but some was dropped.
I always felt like his sparkle was too good to be true in my tank. It's like something out of a fairy tale, especially the way they get better & better all the time after maturity. I loved telling people it's beauty straight from nature.
I know there are plenty juvies available, just wish I could nab one that's not quite such a long wait for the glory ;-)
Def won't just get one next time, esp in light of your input.

baseballman1321, thanks for your example too, even though yours survived it's beginning to show a tendency.
He did fine when I netted him for transfer quite a while ago, although sure fought the ride. fine once in the tank.

how big and old was this guy just wondering. you definitely got to get some more they are a really beautiful fish

I got him in late 2011., was about 3 or 3 1/2 inches.
At death he was 6 inches from nose, before any tail. another 2 inches of tail without his threads. he filled my hand lengthwise, from the heel of my hand to the tip of my fingers.
I lost track of time, standing at the tank with water current running over him in the net basket, not wanting to accept he was dying. didn't suffer, just faded out.
yeah I still have a female. she's nothing by comparison.
He was a calming influence in that tank. now after a day of him gone, the other fish are doing skittish reactions to sudden movement nearby. they used to take ques from him. whenever there was a disturbance he would take a slow swim around then settle in one spot till things returned to normal. he calmed everyone, that's why we considered him the Boss.

I checked, no stray electric current.

Just had to put up a couple of pics of my 'heckelii' that I no longer have. I intend at some point (soon, I hope) to get them again. They are an incredibly beautiful, majestic fish.
