I went to albertsons and bought some salmon for my wife. Of course I thought of my gar and had to see if he would take it. I threw 4 small pcs in and the VATF'S and the Gar took it. My question is will the salmon help him with his growth? I was thinking of giving them a 1lb of Salmon a week (unless it lasts longer) but of course keep them on shrimp.

how big is this gar? sounds like a lot of food and i dont think salmon, tuna, etc is good for fish...at least in large amounts.

My Gar is 9.125". I only gave them about 1/8 of an inch pcs. I was just curious cause Salmon is suppos to be good for us,so I thought y not for our fish too :)

human and fish diets are a little different.

So what is an ideal food source foe a spotted gar? Maybe like 3 diff food types?

i use beef heart tilapia and shrimp with all my fish. they all seem pretty healthy. i tried salmon but it is very greasey.

have any pictures of your gar?

i used shrimp, hikari pellots, blood worms, talipia fellets, and occational feeders.

i feed FD Krill, Floating pellets, smelt, and shrimp as a staple diet. my fish are very healthy. :)

salmon would be just fine for the gar...it's a little on the fatty side as far as fish-food goes, but as long as you mix in something like (like shrimp as you said) you should be fine. and as usual, do not overfeed as many predatory fishes (including gars) will eat to the point of puking from time to time (and this wreaks havoc on the water quality).

either way, in short, salmon is ok as PART of the diet--
