Fed my gar salmon! Will it help him bulk up?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i feed silversides(smelt) and shrimps pellets and have been toying with the idea of a pinkie for fun

i have fed my african lung fish pinkies, but i was worried that they would be messy but it wasnt too bad because he took them whole

regarding pinkies, most likely not a good idea for gars (or many fishes). lungfishes can probably handle them since they can thoroughly crush their food, whereas gars swallow their food whole. given the relative asymmetry in the food item, a pinkie (and the bones, etc) could cause serious problems with a gar, which could prove to be fatal. i'd suggest against them regardless, but definitely not a great idea for gars--

I aprecicte all you guys feedback. Thanks! I will be mixing in a little of everyones diet :)

i've read plenty of times, that salmon fattens the crap out of the fish its fed to lol. a guy posted some piranhas that he fed nothing but salmon to, and within a year those piranhas grew so much and ended up over 3" thick

Now we are talking :):):):):) Thats what I wanted to hear. I dont plan on getting him obesse, but just some good size meat on the boy :)

again, just remember to mix it up. too much fat will kill a gar (or any other predatory fish), sometimes much earlier than you think.

richard and i did a necropsy on a white/piebald tropical gar ($5k price tag on that fish) and found nothing but fatty bodies inside...definitely the main contributor to why it died--

I am going to have them on shrimp as their main source of food and I think im going to give them salmon twice a week (maybe once). I noticed when I gave my fish more Salmon last night they each only took one bite. So Im not going to make them eat it. So if they continue to just take one bite, then ill prob just take Salmon out of the diet. I know they LOVE shrimp!

Any other fish dinners I should give them???

tilapia and smelt are also good items to mix in...the smelt can be a bit on the fatty side as well, but your gars may take it more than they take the salmon. tilapia is usually pretty cheap at the store, and they will usually pick up on that food item quickly as well--
