feeder fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just quarantine my feeders for 2 days & gut load them with hikari flakes. I've never had any problems. Just make sure to dispose of any that seem unhealthy, don't take any chances.

I feed mainly pellets and thawed frozen fish. Goldfish don't have much nutrition. However, I don't think we should deny the little guys their instincts, so I go to the bait store occasionally and buy some minnows, they love em. I also throw in goldfish occasionally. I mean their chompers are there for a reason.

If the tank looks clean they come out of and the feeders them selves look good ..... Toss um in , And dinner they will have .

I would shy away from bad looking feeders :)

But if dinner looks good ;)

Do not be a push over ........

Use you best judgment .

If Piranha go belly up over a stinking gold fish after I saw what they eat out
the river ......... Than :banher::banhim:And ME ./
100% agreed~~:grinno:
I feed my piranhas with feeders, frozen shrimp, super worm, beef heart, fish loves it ~~

i feed ,fish meat/shrimp but i throw in pellets ocassionally and they like that too. my solo red belly i got from a friend who was only fed shrimp has now doubled in size on his pellet only diet theres alot of advantages to feeding pellets like not buying feeders or thawing flesh. but im not against feeders if there quarantined its fun to watch them get eaten...

mine eats feeder and beef only
they will not eat pallet or anything else and they are very aggrassive almost lost a finger couple time and i been bitten couple time too. try hand feeding them lol
dont try it unless your superman

goldfish are poison for your p's. Especially feeders. They secrete a hormone which makes it hard for your p's to metabolize B vitamins. This can lead to all kinds of disease like hole-in-the-head, lateral line disease etc. Also feeders are kept in sub-par conditions and usually contain parasites. If you're gonna feed live (I do) stick to tetras and cichlids.

you shouldn't feed beef either. beefheart is okay when they're young, but there are no naturally occuring herds of cattle swimming through the amazon during rainy season. Stick to white fleshed fish, crustaceans, and maybe the occasionally chicken because P's do eat birds. If you can get em on pellet's more power to you. I've never personally had any luck.

lol

my lfs keeps their feeders in really good conditions. he even has a heater in the feeder tank but i still quarantine them in case. my gar only accepts live food and it never got any disease. i believe after a week in the quarantine tank, it should be safe.

The only thing i can say is quarantine for a week, just to be safe and you can sort of see the fish's quality better than a day or 2, i mean some feeder gold fish are fine , i know quite a few people who have kept feeders for years, (my gf's 8 year old just died recently) and gut load the hell out of them with real food like you would feed any of your pet fish , back when i knew little i only fed my gar feeder gold fish , and he is fine, although he is pretty much off them except for the occasional guppies and rossies

With my first shoal of RBP's I fed them pellets on occasion but their staple was goldfish. I must have been lucky because I never had any problems and never quarantined them. I figured that the piranha were just a really tough and hardy fish. Now I have a new set of fish and I feed mostly frozen foods... mainly krill, bloodworms, and shrimp. Fed a few goldfish also. Back when I only fed goldfish, I was more into seeing the fish get chomped. Now I'm more into my fish's health and color. I have a few shots in my gallery and plan to take some more tomorrow to show the growth and difference in red color over the past 2 weeks since I purchased them. Stay tuned. And good luck

Variety is key, and I think its greatly over exaggerated on how terrible goldfish are to P's. I fed them on occasion with no issues what so ever, but like any fish you should vary the diet.

I know someone who has been feeding his shoal of reds only goldfish for the past 10 years without problems. Maybe not the healthiest, but by no means instant death.
