Feeder fish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I just use an old 60 gallon freezer that I keep dozens of wild caught shiners in for my peacock bass, (I keep a old HOB filter on it and a fluval 406 canister I wasn't using) every week or so I bring up a couple dozen upstairs and I keep them in a 10 gallon to quarentine them again. I just replenish the ten gallon every week :D I gut load them with Omega one marine micro pellets that have garlic and they go CRAZY for them. They're also bite size and slowly sink so they have no trouble getting it.

Do anyone keep feeder fish for over a period of time? I've tried in a 10gallon tank and just keep getting dead feeder fish lol my intake gets them sucked up too

I've turned many into regular "fish" I currently have 6 goldfish in my 75 that are between 4-6 inches that I bought as feeders. I also have a mini pond with about 7 Rosy's and a 5 gallon grow out with about 10 really small Rosys.

I tend to not use them unless I have too. If a fish is meaty I have no problem starving them onto a better diet.

However smaller younger fish don't fare as well when starved lol. So we just have a planted guppy setup. It naturally reproduced enough feeders for us when we need them. And all home bred in a clean environment.

What's the benefit of quarantining TWICE?

I'd just maintain a higher salinity for your QT tank. Maybe about 3-4ppt. Acclimate the new feeders you get and your mortality should be greatly reduced.

Also, gravel can be removed if you want but as was mentioned earlier you WILL NEED substrate for bacteria, and lots of it. When you have a filter full of dead fish you know what that does to your ammonia load...which kills fish...which makes more ammonia...
