I've often wondered about the color that fades away.It can't be die as I don't see why they'd do that to such cheap fish?

That is true...

I've almost always had feeder Goldfish as pets. The last batch(6) almost lasted 10 years(1 did).

I currently have 6 more that are just over a year old. Mine have always lost the white/black and turned to orange. Except 1 that was my favorite. It was all white and it eyes appeared see through

Nice.. Do you have pics of the white goldfish?

Never used goldfish as feeders but I have kept rosies and guppies as pets. My girlfriend has a tank FULL of feeder guppies that were supposed to go to my pickerel...they ended up living better than him lol.

Yep, it happens.. lol

I have a small run off/catch-all pond on my property that has been stocked with minnows (by the original owner for fishing bait) and has a well established popluation of frogs and turtles, and other aquatic critters. So, about 5 years ago I decided to give it some color and went out and purchased about 30 feeder goldfish. The following season, I didn't see any sign of any goldfish, so I figured they were fell to predation and/or winter kill. But, the season I finally saw a handful had survived and thrived ranging up to about 12". A couple of years I decided to add some kois, but so far I haven't caught any koi sightings.

No...that was back in my day when I had 26 tanks and over 300 fish, even though he was cool... I never bothered.

I've picked out a few pretty feeder fish in my lifetime. I got one that was all metallic white with a perfectly round dot on it's forhead like the koi. I forget what that kind is called but I still have the fish. I got him the year I graduated highschool which would be 1988 and he's about 15" and very smart for a goldfish. I named him "Spot".
