My LFS has feeder turtles!

I'm not sure what type they are, but the fish apparently eat them whole with no problems. They cost the same as the feeder frogs in this thread, but they are a little smaller.

I'm considering feeding them to my monster tank as I believe that variety is the key to any diet (fish and humans alike), but I'm not sure if I wanna see the little guys die in front of my eyes...

I know it sounds silly cos I already feed them live frogs, but that's just the feeling I'm experiencing about it ... would you feed turtles to your fish?

No way! First, ethically, I don't like it because I know how turtles are over-collected here and abroad for the Asian food market, and I personally know people in the population recovery efforts. Secondly, between salmonella and other pathogens, I wouldn't consider them "clean" feeders. There has to be better, cheaper, more ethical and cleaner protein than turtles.

what the ****!?!? feeder turtles???

are they just very small red ear sliders? can the fish crush that shell easy? is salmonella a problem for fish?
have any pics of said feeder turtles?
ethically, i just couldent feed them to a fish intentionally. i have a baby RES and that little guy is cool as ****!

not cool, dont support it, ive had many pet turtles, so much more personality than a feeder, its more like murder than feeding if you use turtles

They don't look like red ear sliders (not that I know much about them) and they seem to have soft shells. It's not really a question about them harming the existing population cos if they're so cheap (around 3USD for 12) they've got to be farm bred.

No way in heck!

I would never support something like that, heck even feeder fish are dangerous, unless you breed them yourself.

As far as the co-called feeder Turtles go, I hope that people buy them as pets instead.

hmmm.. poor little turtles. im sure theres a lot better feeders out there than turtles.
on feeder price... ill take some and grow em out and sell them later.

come on guys!!! arnt we ]v[onster fish keepers!!!
id say that if they r soft shelled turtles, and bearing that i dont nkow if samonela is a problem for fish, id feed them to my fish if they could handle it. i see nuthin wring with it as long as the fish insnt harmed at all.

Howdy,

First off, that is not really a good line of argumentation. I am sure there are a lot of poor people in Taipei who would go out and collect wildlife for a very low salary. Thus, the turtles (and frogs for that matter) may or may not be captive bred.

I personally believe that there are enough varieties of fish food available. We do not need to extend the scope and feed our /\/\onsters with reptiles or amphibians whose nervous system is higher developed than that of fish.
