Feeding an Oscar

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
as the others have said, a good pellet should be the staple of the oscar's diet. I'd feet it 2-3 times per day up to around 6" then cut down to 1-2 times per day up until around 10" or so and then cut down to once a day. Once it's a few years old you can cut down to feeding probably 3-4 times per week.

If you want to supplement some of the frozen foods others have mentioned then that's fine as a treat. Live fish will definitely be accepted by the oscar but it's definitely recommended to breed your own and feed these no more than say once or twice a week at most. other live foods you can try are crayfish and earthworms.

Definately feed the Oscar pellets. He'll eat them if he gets hungry enough. As far as feeders go, I would buy a pair or two of wild guppies. In a month you will have plenty of feeders and at the just the right size for a juvenile Oscar. As he grows and you still want to give him feeders, you could set a minnow trap and get your own or you can feed him crayfish, they love um. But, feed live foods sparingly, just to give the fish something to do predatory wise, like he would do in the wild.
