Why pull the tail off? In nature don't they eat birds with beaks and bones, fish with big bones, baby monkeys and so on?

Not 100% sure as far as i know there are some videos floating around about aros leaping and eating small birds/monkeys from branches but we don't know if they even survive.

The only part of the shrimp i remove is the little spine in the back of the tail that is really sharp.

It's just a precaution, the tail spikes can puncture your finger so imagine what could happen to the aros internal organs:(

It seems to me that eating birds and baby monkeys is a VERY rare occurrence. Most of their diet consists of fish and insects.

Besides, nature needs to be rough and dangerous, otherwise all species would overpopulate. However, it's not practical in the home aquarium to put the animal in potential danger or harm simply because its like nature in the first place. If we wanted our animals to experience nature, both its freedoms and its dangers, then we'd release them into their natural habitats. It's just better to take precautions.

Okay. I was just on the panda aquatics web page where there are experts that breed and sell Asian Aros and they too said to remove the tail when feeding shrimp. I guess so far I have been really lucky. I love Monsterfishkeepers, I learn something new everyday.

i fed my 5 inch aro with raw shrimp couple days ago & it seems like the aro is gonna die now. swims very weird, jerks is mouth, & has no appetite. The raw shrimp was peeled & fresh also. I hope it doesnt die.

you and me both.. but a few years ago one of our members had an aro die mysteriously and he found blood from inside the aro on the outside of the aro and he thought it might be from the tails of the shrimp that he didn't remove.

so, since then i've been removing the tails all of the time and the shells too most of the time. not so much with the arowana, but the peacock bass spit the shells back out and make more of a mess for me to clean up.

oh.. and for the OP's original question. i've never fed cooked anything to my fish. well, except pellets, but i resisted that for many years, convenience and cost got me though. they all still get some kinda meat a couple times a week, they get pellets every day now.

I feed all my aros raw white or tiger prawns. Cut off the head and tail so you dont puncture an organ when they eat it....
If they take em with shell on thats a huge bonus but you get to know what fish will spit it out.
I cut mine at the knuckle or in half and leave the shell on...
Thats where all the carotine is ;)
But a few I have to feed shell off or it ends up in the sump and starts to smell....
