I have had paddletail newts that LOVED than thrived on random (like once ever 2 weeks) leftovers of cooked chicken or salmon.

I have a juvi senegal bichir that just got its first taste of salmon. He went nuts for it, so did the Mbuna cichlid that lives with him. Also, my dads giant Danios and my remaining paddletail (they life together, in harmony...) went crazy for it as well. It was cooked with like a smidge of lemon, salt and pepper.

I want to know: Is it okay to feed "table scraps" of meat to your fish? I've seen raw fish be fed, but this is really awesome protein that I would otherwise throw out. I've had the paddletails flip out for pre-cooked shrimp, I was contemplating feeding this tank some of that as well. Might as well, if I am going to throw it out!

pre cooked shrimps go to my fish as a treat, my bichirs go mental for it. one of hte only things my datnoid will actually eat is shrimp. my clown knife will take shrimp from my fingers too. I personally always get 2 full shrimps, rip them into smaller pieces and feed them to my fish. mostly at lights out though so the nocturnal predators can grab them instead of my greedy giant gourami and tinfoil barbs.

as for salmon its contains a lot of oil but in small doses It can't be bad. I feed my fish spinach, melon, raspberries, blueberries. you name it. in the wild most asian and amazonian fish will encounter seeds, berries and fruits and it makes up a small part of most omnivores diets. my giant gourami is in all sense of the word a true omnivore.

I never thought of doing that. I sort of do it for my plecos, but not any of my other fish.

as joe said, most meats like beef and steak are not the best for fish. It is unnatural and those proteins and whatnot are harder to break down. But I too am guilty of throwing random bits of chicken to bass I used to have.

Cooked shrimp and fish is not the best, simply because cooking it breaks down and takes out some of the beneficial proteins, vitamins and minerals. But that is not to say it is unhealthy, just that feeding raw would be better. So keep giving the shrimp and salmon to your guys! I would only pay attention to what else you add to the food when you cook, but most spices or other things wont necessarily be bad either

It is usually advised against but if it will be very seldom and not oily like salmon, why not? It is always best to copy what your fish are feeding on in the wild. If you think they will never encounter such food in the wild, it is in their best interest not to feed it to them.

Never feed your fish anything with pepper and salt and cooking the protein first takes a lot of protein out. Just feed a little before you cook if you want.

My fish get talapia and shrimp as a staple, of course raw.

oh really??? I cook mine first with cajun and other spices and the fish love it;)

Why do people do this? It's not even particularly good for your dog, let alone your fish.
