Good question and observation. When I took out my Male Sysn and placed it as a solitary fish, the head was way bigger. Now, since it's not the dominant fish, the head went down. I would agree that sub-dominant fishes would grow slower because they get less food and get harassed but I have different vieja's in there so their growth rates still differ. A good example is this....my bifa is the most dominant fish but my Sysn is 1" longer than the Bifa.
One more thing, don't expect long flowing fins when you have a community tank. I have 6 silver dollars in my 360 and I like them but I always see them biting the extensions of my cichlids
