I have a somewhat newly aquired (about 2 months) Silver Arowana about 10". The LFS had been feeding rosy minnows and small comets only, so I was so proud of myself after getting him to readily accept Aro Sticks, and other pellets. After reading more, I want to try and vary his diet to ensure proper nutrition and health. So, I bought some raw shrimp, de-shelled them and cut them into manageable pieces. He won't even look at them. Thankfully, as they fall to the bottom they get immediately consumed by other residents. Any special technique on how to get him to take these? I tried moving the shrimp in front of him with my fingers and then letting it fall in front of him, and I tried putting it into the current of the powerhead so that it got circulated quickly around the tank (to appear alive). Neither worked. Is it just patience, with a little bit of starvation to encourage him to take it, or anything else I might try? Thanks!

I would think give it more time. My black aro always turned her face to shrimp. Now she will take a piece here and there. Does she eat freeze dried frozen krill or shrimp?

Haven't tried anything else yet but feeders and pellets. Actually, I tried a nightcrawler which went well, until my 6" JD took it literally from his mouth. I was slow to try new foods, as I wanted to make sure he settled in well with the new tank, co-residents, etc. Now that he's on a schedule, comfortable with water changes, the tank and other fish I was going to try new foods. I didn't want to add too many variables at once.
Are freeze dried shrimp or krill big enough for a 10"?

is there another place this "Feeding Sticky" might be other than in this Arowana forum? I read the "Foods for Aros" sticky in this forum which tells me WHAT not HOW. I'm comfortable with what to feed them, I just wondered if anyone with greater Arowana keeping experience than me had an idea on how to transition them to different foods. Such as shrimp...

A couple of suggestions;

Try stuffing the shrimp with the aro sticks, this will help the shrimp float and the aro will have a longer time to take it.

Best way to feed shrimp is by hand, I would start training your aro to take the aro sticks from your fingers(you may get bit) once it is willing to take food from your hand give the shrimp a try.

My silver loves superworms. They'll float if you place them gently on the surface. Great protein in them.

Starve your aro. After a couple days throw in some shrimp. If it doesnt work, keep starving until it works.
:banhim: LOL

yea I'll do the same too, starve the fish.

Okay, this isn't getting any easier. I can get him to take feeders and pellets, but I 'm still having trouble with shrimp/prawns etc. I'm using hemostats to get the shrimp in front of him, and even leaving the hemostats proped on the lid holding the shrimp in the water. I guess mine just doesn't have the prey drive/food response that most aros do. The pieces of shrimp are sized small enough that I can't really get any pellets shoved into it to get it to float. I think maybe I'll try meal worms or superworms. I just want to try and feed him a variety. As posted I'm sure I could starve him into taking it, but I want to keep him full and happy, to encourage growth. Any other aro feeding tricks from the pros?
