I have been in the market for used aquariums for a couple of weeks now to breed convicts to feed my jags and today i came across 3-20 gal tanks 2-30 gal tanks and 1-55 gal tank all with pumps for $150 (good deal imo). I plan on using the 55gal for convicts and the 30gal tanks for fry. My quesion is will the convicts breed fast enough to feed my jags one every couple of days or should i use the 3-20 gal tanks to breed guppys or mollys too?

id put 3 pairs of convicts in 3-20 gallon fry in 55 gallon and you have 2 left over 30g to do w/e with

agree with boosh, save the 55 for the fry and maybe one of the 30 gals, put new fry in the 30 gal for the first week or two then transfer to the 55 gallon, and breed with three pair in the 20 gals. once you find 3 breeding pair of cons, they'll be plenty to feed you jags with, faster you remove the fry from the cons the faster they spawn. when i bred cons for breeders i had 2 pair in 2 20 gallon tanks and 2 two gallon tanks as grow outs, and one 55 as the tank i fed out of. the more area you have for grow out, the easier to keep water conditions good and the faster fry will grow.

I tried it and IMHO I'd just set up a quarantine tank or two. Breeding the cons isn't very economical or time effective.

the cons are more fun, and more work, and having a quarantine tank is great, but personally, i will not use feeders unless i breed them, my fish are two important to chance, plus in my case, i have a little brother that stops by all the time, and i feel much better knowing he'll be throwing safe feeders in my tank behind my back.

well i just got home from getting the tanks and it was a total disaster. first i had to travel 45 minutes to get there and ended up in the middle of the ghetto with my pregnant wife. then when i saw the tanks were way under size i offerd her 50 buck and she accepted.when i got home i meshured the tanks i realized that i ended up with 3-10 gallon tanks 1-20 gallon and 1-26 gallon tank. then i filled them up (outside) to check for leaks one of the 10 gallons had a bad leak.the pumps look like they were all messed up. im not shure what im going to do now.does anybody have any suggestions on breeding convicts in this situation? will the 2-10 gallon tanks be big enough for the fry?

that sucks!!! yeah something similar to this happened to me when i got a tank off of craigslist and i know ask ALOT of questions and thoroughly check out everything before i buy it, that really sucks though 2 10gs might be enough but i would just re silicon the leaky 10g so you have 3 for the fry, the hardest part if getting the old silicon off but with a good razor blade shouldnt be too bad and its only 10g so will be easy to check for leaks after your silicon cures and then just reapply to that spot
