Feeding Lionfish

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Mine eats mysis shrimp.

So far I have tired the following with no success:

Shrimp
Tilapia
Salmon
Squid
Blood Worms

I have tried soaking all of the above in garlic. I have tried with garlic and without. The lionfish still has not eaten, at least I have not seen him. He does not look overly skinny so who knows.

Just give it time when they get going the problem will be what it wont eat.....Just feed live if its getting skinny feeder shrimps/guppys will do the job. i have never seen a volitan starve 2 death......other lions however....

I'll pick up some guppys today.

try this not cooked and take a needle and thread and put shrimp on the thread and keep bringing it close to top .then you will be able to hand feed it ,i have mine train took about2 weeks .but shoud also know is that they only eat every two days.

I just threw two rosys in with no luck.
DO NOT make the lions diet consist of freshwater feeders!
There are studies that show that by doing this, your lionfish will have problems and get diseases like lockjaw down the road. Try live ghost/glass/grass shrimp to start. This is what I did and he immediately ate them. While still feeding him live shrimp, buy large frozen mysis. These are very similar to ghost shrimp. To switch to dead food, get a small acrylic rod and use it to put the shrimp right in front of the lion. He will learn that it is food and eventually you will be able to just stick your hand in and drop mysis in front of him and he'll eat it.
