Feeding live frogs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Typically any non fish meat is bad for predatory fish. A lot of amphibians also contain toxins.
I'd say they would be fine as a treat every now and then but I agree that it shouldn't be a part of it's main diet. I also agree that not all frogs are safe for a fish to eat in the first place, many contain potentially deadly toxins within their skin that they use as a self defense measure. Honestly tho I'd still say it's cheaper in the long run to feed earthworms as treats rather then frogs.

With the quality of modern fish foods i don't think it's really necessary, or riskworthy, to feed live, whether it's feeders or frogs or even mice! which i've seen done. I believe even the predator guys would rather pellet train. The only live things i'd ever feed my fish are earthworms which I harvest in abundance, and regularly, from my 'safe' wormheap. No fertilisers etc.

Is it really worth taking the risk with your potentially expensive stock, your pride and joy, by feeding something that could harm them, when there is no need to in the first place?

Not as fast as a guppy or convict.

Thank you all for your replies, they sure helped. I was only wondering because I felt a lot of the feeding vids I see on facebook for example are live frogs and it got me thinking if people were feeding frogs over fish because they are safer or something... I guess its just for dramatic effect maybe
