Feeding live frogs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thank you all for your replies, they sure helped. I was only wondering because I felt a lot of the feeding vids I see on facebook for example are live frogs and it got me thinking if people were feeding frogs over fish because they are safer or something... I guess its just for dramatic effect maybe
Probably just for the video. Piranhas or Aimaras eating terrestrial animals is cool to watch, just not that healthy.

Our aro gets invasive lizards & frogs from the garden; adores 'em, good "enrichment" & so far so good for health & colour. Native anoles do carry parasites specific to mammals (cats/mongoose) so there's some risk, but unlikely to transfer to a fish.
Also bugs from the windowsill.

As with window-bugs, but particularly amphibians including newts/salamanders have capacity to be incredibly toxic.
Google & get a good ID on anything before feeding. Bright colour is an indicator, but by no means adequate "tell".
An unhappy red eft may just kill your whole tank before you can swap the water. Same/similar toxin to pufferfish, but on/through the skin.

Also, depending on where you are some of the amphibians may be endangered, so get a good ID.

Anything fish-based I try to freeze before feeding to make sure they're free of parasites, even the swordtails from our own pond.

And if the local wildlife authorities find out one of the videos were endangered amphibians it's not going to bide well for the people who participated in those feedings/taking vids if it was actually endangered/ threatened species there is too many eyes not to get away with it once its uploaded.

I find it distasteful to even find entertainment in those live feedings on my end here when it comes to feeding amphibians (they are really teetering here in this rapid climate change hence my thoughts on this topic) why risk it when you dont know if their tomorrow is guaranteed. They are fragile with pollution and all of that jazz. Out of all animal species out there. Guess what is the most threatened group? Amphibians

I have been wondering recently, if you feed your fish live frogs or salamanders and such animals, could they possibly pass on parasites to the fish? Or do they maybe just carry parasites that dont survive in fish?
What type of fish? I would think wild caught anything would be a risk for parasites but some predator fish do eat amphibians and small birds and mammals in the wild. You also have to know whether the type you’re feeding has any type of venom or toxin

I personally would pickup earthworms off my driveway after a hard storm during the spring before I hired a landscaping company. If you know a area in your yard that has not been fertilized dig for worms and rinse them off prior to feeding. Your Delhezi will go nuts once it smells the worms lol.

Also a baitshop will sell earthworms and should be ok to feed out of the container.
