If you guys had no choice at this point, and had to feed your fish live foods what would you choose. I know that feeding live foods comes with the risk of diseases but my dats just dont eat prepared foods I have 1 dat that will only eat dried krill other than that nothing else. I have purchased a larger one that hasnt had anything to eat since I had him it's been at least 3 weeks maybe even longer. So at this point I just have to give in.

So with that said; out of all the live foods which would you guys choose. Which would have the best nutrients and would be the safest.... HELP ME OUT GUYS.....THANKS

Jeff

not to derail your main question but IMO your dat can go longer than 3 weeks without eating. dont give in!!!

if you do give live food be sure to quarnt. them for awhile and feed them healthy foods before feeding to your dat.

Jeff

personally id keep him on live food

nothings better really :)

you could try this method

http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=33661

just keep him eating

and avoid starvation

1.a. Using your prepaired food or
1.b. Make a paste with dried food - grind it or a combination of your favorite dry foods, add just enough water to make it stick together

2. get a piece of thin fishing line

3. make a little ball of the food on the end of the fishing line

4. use the fishing line to tease the fish into thinking it is live food. They will eventually associate you putting food in the tank that they will not require seeing it move before they eat it.

Another way I got my fish to eat pellets is I always gave them their feeders individually from a small net. They will soon associate the net with food and strike at the first thing that comes out of the net. That is when you put some pellets in the net.

Soon they will associate the pellets with food and the net will not be required anymore.

Have you tried frozen foods? If you must go with live foods maybe blackworms, if you use feeders make sure you quarintine them for a few days and add some salt to their water.

Thanks all.....I will try you guys' suggestions

Hope it works out for you, let us know.

I hand fed my dats feeders, than slowly moved to beefheart, I hand fed them beefheart instead of feeders, took about 3 weeks and it worked.

try fresh squid.. its so damn smelly that they will be attracted to it.
make sure the squid pieces will hit the snout of the datnoid.. it gives them a knee
jerk response and they will assume that piece is alive. :)

If you have to feed live, feed nightcrawlers bought from the baitshop. Cleaner
and more nutritious than feeder fish .
