Feeding Tire Track eel

Was the night crawler actually stuck? I've seen this happen to my eels with red wigglers where they get attacked so quickly that the eel accidentally sucks them through their gill, but they got it out themselves and then went right back and ate it.

Did your fiancé actually have to reach in and pull the night crawler out?

He was trying to see if it was stuck. Him swimming away from his hand is what made it come out on its own.

Btw, I would say that night crawlers are probably a bit big for an 8-10" tire track eel. I think they should still be on red wigglers at that point. However, if you want to cut the night crawler up into many smaller pieces then I think it would be fine.

I agree, likely attacked the nighcrawler so quickly it poked out his gill cover. I've seen it with red wriggler as well, and the eel just slurps it back in.

You can also culture the red wrigglers by building them an indoor compost box /tub. You'll have a never ending supply in a few months :)

My TT has recently transitioned to homemade gel food. I was worried he wasn't getting enough vitamins and other nutrients on a tilapia / bloodworm only diet.

WalMart is your cheapest place for worms (Red or Nightcrawlers) unless you have a bait store. I have never had a problem with nightcrawlers when the eels are >6". Mine will usually take 4-5 at a feeding, sometimes none - all depends on their mood. Never seen one "choke" on a worm. I go through ~30 nightcrawlers every night to every other night. EVERY fish in the tank likes them. (I buy them in boxes of 500 from my local bait supplier for $50)
