Feeding your fish dogg food ?

If you're looking for CHEAP way to save money on food, simply buy directly from the feed mills that supply the hatcheries.

Not trying to argue with you RD, just putting my opinion and experience out there. I have done years of research and have years of experience keeping many different fish species, of course dog food is not ment for fish but considering some of the crap people feed their fish(hot dogs included)its way better and as i stated"only as an occasional treat" IF thats what you want to feed them as a treat only..Yes, there are many better options to feed your fish but you make it sound like the fish are gonna die tomorrow if you feed them alil dog food every now and then. I've seen some of the crap peopl post concerning feeding their fish and i just laugh at them...I only feed Omega One foods to my fish but my GG can handle alil extra fat content and hes the only one who gets it and only occasionally. All im sayin is some fish species CAN handle it with no issues....but hey....what do i know..

I've never once stated such a thing, I was simply offering my opinion to the OP. The very fact that you state that there are "many better options" implies to me that you clearly understand why one shouldn't be recommending or supporting this idea to someone such as the OP who seems to view this type of food as a sound method of maximizing growth in a fish. Clearly it is not.

So have I, and so do I. If you have some actual scientific research to support your view (the pros of feeding dog food to fish) I would certainly be interested in reading it.

I said as a TREAT OCCASIONALLY to certain species is fine.....end of story....and your link/research refers to africans cichlids....thats never an option for africans of any type. Also i nver said there were pros to feeding dog food to fish....a TREAT for species like GG's that can handle the higher fatty contents is fine IMO...

From my experience with GG's and pacu, they can handle the extra fat and filler. Pacu readily eat nuts--shell and all---loads of protein and fat.. I'm not suggesting that the op go out and buy a bag of dog food as a primary source of food. Certain types of fish can handle the treats if used just for that---TREATS.

My 2 cents,
---Chris

I read what you posted, perhaps you should go back & re-read what I have stated in this discussion? Ditto to you Chris. I'm not suggesting that an occasional treat that's high in protein OR lipids is going to kill anyones fish. My comments were directed to the OP.

Remember, the person who started this discussion, by stating ....

ONE OF MY FRIEND FEED HIS FISH DOG FOOD AND FISH BEEN GROWING REALLY FAST AND IM WORDERING WELL IT HARM MY FISH IF I FEED SOME TO THEM!!!!

MY GT AND FHXFT LOVE IT ALSO AND IT GET THERE BELLY FAT ....

Where exactly did he/she mention GG's, or Pacus?

and your link/research refers to africans cichlids....thats never an option for africans of any type

What's never an option to Africans?

Everybody's a freakin expert on fish husbandry.....Not ALL tropical fish are the same with the same feeding habits...Some species CAN handle a higher lipid content with no issues..Do some research on the feeding habits of different fish species..You guys are generalizing..There is a huge difference between omnivores/carnivores and herbivores, with very different feeding habits and nutritional needs. Dog Food is for dogs and not ment as a staple for fish, however as a treat for SOME fish species it is fine IF fed only occasionally as a treat.

You don't have to be an "expert" to know that *DOG* food is meant for dog, and not fish. Dog ≠ fish. If you wanna feed mcdonalds to your fish go ahead, but don't try to tell everyone it is right.

I guess without knowing what type of fish the op is planning on feeding(or giving as treats) dog food, no one can give any type of sound advice. I only suggested that a few kibbles a month for a pacu or GG won't hurt them at all. Again not for a primary food source but if you have some lying around--why not? I would never feed my aros dog food--not even for a treat as I know that they can't handle the lipids and fat/filler content.

Let's just agree that in general it is a very bad practice unless you know the biology of the species that you are feeding.

So what's the point on feeding a treat that doesn't have any benefits at all? Boredom?

The OP stated what species of fish (at least some of them?) he/she was feeding dog food to on page 1.
