Feeding your fish dogg food ?

The OP stated what species of fish (at least some of them?) he/she was feeding dog food to on page 1.

Wow...appologies...I missed this post... To the op --- These species of fish shouldn't be fed dog food, not even for a treat. Their body chemistry can't handle it. You will notice external growth but internal problems causing the lifespan of the fish to shorten.

Chris...a treat for who? LOL It's a fish. Fish don't know, expect or show appreciation for "treats". It comes down to the WHY that it's being done. It's not for the fish...it's a visual treat for the owner at the potential expense of the fish's health. "Treat" them with raw shrimp or scallops.

I used to feed my RBP's dog food, but I wouldn't risk it with anything else.

Sadly, sometimes it takes 5+ pages to come to the conclusion that feeding dog food to fish is a bad idea.

You don't have to be an "expert" to know that *DOG* food is meant for dog, and not fish. Dog ≠ fish. If you wanna feed mcdonalds to your fish go ahead, but don't try to tell everyone it is right.

Well I did the complete opposite. I wanted to see if my dog would eat fish food and he did. He ate a couple pellets of NLS and loved it!

I have a special diet. York Peppermint Patties and Diet Mt. Dew. And i am NOT sharing them with my fish...even though it would be a nice "treat" and just about as beneficial as "Beneful" to the fish.

Matt...yup...no matter the label...it's stupid.

piggy - perhaps while you are fine tuning your research on feeding dog food to fish, and the dietary requirements of African cichlids, you should also brush up on your reading comprehension skills.

The OP wasn't enquiring about feeding dog food as an occasional TREAT.
