Take it out. Get some tank water out into a bucket. Squeeze the foam in bucket of water. Throw away the bucket of water. Put the foam back.

Ok, another question, filter related.
Would two emperor 400's be sufficient? Being a corner tank, there isn't much room for any more power filters than that. I'd have to go with a canister filter.

meh. Then I guess add the Emperor and see where that gets you since you can't' remove the one working filter. Is the Emperor running on another tank or dry?
I have one dry emperor and one that a friend is letting me have that has been running his tank for a year or so. Said I can take it he has some expensive one he added a while ago and the emperor is unnecessary.

Update: earthworms were a success. They have eaten 4 of them in 4 hours! Added an emperor too.

Good update! Keep it up! You've dived head first into keeping rays lol. If you had that 180 up and running it would have be alot easier... try soaking cut bits of earthworms with cut shrimp and tilapia. Will take weeks to train them to eat shrimp and tilapia but well worth the work!

Hopefully the Emperor will start turning those numbers round but nitrIte that high is not good. The salt should protect them but I would still look to maintain that number below 2 and preferably below 1 by continuing with water changes, remembering to replace the salt removed when you change the water.
The pH being that low already is also of concern, it suggests your water has low buffering like mine and will need additional measures to keep the pH stable. Keep a close eye on the pH value daily too, you don't want it to drop below 6. Water changes should also help keep the pH up but at some point it looks like you'll need supplementary measures.

From looking at the last 2 pictures you posted, the top one is definately not a retic or a hystrix. It looks more like an orbignyi type. The second one most likely is the same species as well. These rays will grow much bigger than both retics and hystrix.

My bigger ray ate 2 worms for breakfast, the little one ate 1. The big one looked amazingly more healthy today, fattening up already, and he loves to eat. The smaller one is a bit more timid and skittish, and takes more to get him to eat, but he eats.
Gonna do another water change and hopefully we will have the parameters under control.
You guys helped save their lives, you don't know how much I thank you.
I will try and get some better pics of them when I get home maybe we can get a positive id on them. I think they are definitely two different species. They look different, but as we all know, I am no expert lol.
