What I hate more than paying for forums is people whine when having to pay for someone elses hard work. Takes lots of time, knowledge and money to startup, run and maintain a successful forum. Is it so bad for someone to want to supplement their income for all the hours of work and investment they put into their online community? Why should they settle for even having the server costs paid off by ads, when so many people are making so much money off of their work?

Seems more than fair to me. But most are unaware of how much time, knowledge and money it takes to run a forum. Forums are now essentially online businesses.
well im glad you feel that way, but unfortunately, i dont agree with you. all websites cost money to run and maintain. do you have to pay a fee each time you visit a random website?

a forum is ran by its members just as much as the admin staff behind the scenes. if it werent for the knowledge of its members and their posts, a forum would be USELESS. we take advantage of a forum just as much as they take advantage of us.

with that said, i will NEVER join a forum that requires a fee. thats just my point of view

Well Jose, look at it this way, you can throw away your plants you trim, or you can sell them. Since your plants regrow, that 20 dollar package you buy, can easily pay itself back in time, then start making you money on the side. A LOT of people sell things that replenish themselves, and they aren't vendors/paying members that sell in bulk.

Shrimp, snails, plants, all grow back/breed. People make a lot more money than you think off of it. There are a LOT of people who have grow out tanks that sell trimmings and easily make $100-$200 a FS thread, shrimp breed like crazy and 'decent' shrimp can fetch good money, and one of those shrimp can birth 20-50 eggs? Idk, but crazy numbers that can be sold for $1 a pop, and can constantly be churning out profit.

It may be messed up, but where there is an opportunity to make money, you don't think that EVERYONE who can make some money will? Think of it as taxation on the members of the site. Shoot, if you are making $300 a month off the site, and they charge you 1%, multiplied by bulk member/sellers, that 1%, only $3x lets say, 1000 members, that's still an easy $3,000 the site has profited that would go back to improving the servers, setting up functions, etc etc.

You see it as a bad thing, but it's not really.

yeah all that is true. but it just seems like that forum has taken a very negative tone lately towards people who make money by selling stuff to other members. is that so wrong? its like theyre trying to become the IRS and penalize all those who have made big profits without paying "taxes" (fees or membership dues).

of course profits will be made in the buy n sell of any forum. thats what its for, to sell stuff and make some money, or buy some things and get a good deal. it just seems like they got upset when they saw members making money. and now all of the sudden they want a piece of the pie? it just doesnt seem right to me. i get the impression that theyre doing it for all of the wrong reasons.

i have a feeling that one of the sponsors got pissed, and threatened to leave if they didnt address the problem. basically, it all comes down to GREED. i wouldnt have a problem paying a $10 membership to support that site, now that i have thought about it more. but forcing members to pay a percentage of their profit is ridiculous. who are they now, eBay? forums take no responsibility for the sales made. there is NO buyer or seller protection, NONE!

if they want a share of the profits like ebay, then they will have to offer services and protection like ebay, IMO. and when you think about it, it really doesnt cost them much to allow their members to sell. they dont do squat, other than create a seperate section for posts related to buying and selling. yeah its extra load on the server, etc etc, but hey, thats just part of running a forum/website

People have to remember that alot of things on the B & S are sold at a loss,
especially tanks, stands and filters. And by doing this it brings more people and
younger people into the hobby, who normally could not afford it, therefore continuing its furture.
Why should people have to pay for something they are already taking a loss on.

I personally wouldn't be a member if I had to pay.
They should open up a store and make profits on sales of gear that represent the forum site.

Same here,I sell ALOT of fish. But if you facteor in food time electricity and everyhing else, everything I sell is at a loss.I do it cause I love it,some $$ coming back helps keep everything going but it doesnt come close to what anyone would call profit.shaving a few dollars off of that would make me go elsewhere.
That being said I bring fish to club auctions all the time knowing full well I can get a better price online and the club gets 30-50%
Clubs have a charter mission statement and open finances so members see where the $$ is going.Once it starts to look like that forum is making significant $$ everyone is going to start demanding to know where the $$ goes and accountability.I watched a similar situation almost destroy a forum I belong to and it wasnt a pretty sight.

I'm a firm believer in free market economics in that the market will work itself out. Members of the forum will seek alternate avenues to sell their wares and the site will lose hits.

Shouldn't you be stating your complaint on the site that's doing this? What good will it do here? And if you don't like it and it's not going to change, just stop going there. If they lose enough members, maybe they'll find a new approach.
