Thanx 4 the tip. I went to Fintastic in Charlotte NC Tuesday 7/29/08 and purchased a male dovii. He is around 3 inches long. This will be my first time raising a male Dovii. Any advice that you guys can provide that will help me raise my first male Dovii will be greatly appreciated.:D

I'm gad I could help. Were the doviis still on sale for $20? And more importantly, did they have any big grammodes for less than $90?:)

The Dovii that I purchased is only about 3 inches long but he has lots of black speckles and a long mouth which is usually characteristic of a male Dovii. He was on sale for $20. The salesman also said that he was about 90% sure that it was a male. They had several large females in the tank and one juvenile about 5 inches long with a lot of attitude the appeared to be a male but we were not sure because it only had a few black speckles. I should have purchased him because he was vicious. They also had some beautiful Grammodes that the salesman said he would give us a good deal on. I am experimenting to see which foods he likes to eat. So far I have given him cichlid pellets, and cichlid sticks. What else can I give him to assure rapid growth?:headbang2

Ok, all 3 of my female dovii had black spots when small, they typically lost them around the 4" mark and they turned to bronze spots. Thats why I asked if you were positive.

I just picked up another one too and it has more black spots then my past females so I'm hoping for a male as well.

As for food, feed night crawlers, shrimp, pellets, krill and maybe some beefheart every couple weeks. Thats what I feed to mine.

Was it Ash that helped you? He's ppretty knowledgeable. If he said male, it's probably male. Can you give me any more info on those grammodes? Like size and price? For the right money, I'll go get them tomorrow.:)

Thanks and cheers.;)

Yes it was Ash that helped me, and yes he does know his fish. I have been dealing with him for a few years. He sold me a beautiful male Islantum Cichlid a few years ago. Fintastic is the ultimate fish store. I live 2 hours away but it is always worth the trip. I was so exited about finding a male Dovii that I didnt really ask many questions about the Grammodes. Call Fintastic and talk to Ash.
