Female Festae Bars

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Though I agree with what bomillyiam said, I have to disagree with the barring answer he gave only because I have an 8" female that is almost completely barred, and she showed no barring to very little until she was around 7". I also have a male that is always barred and he too had nothing until he was around the 6-7" mark. And then again I have other females that have been beautifully colored and barred as small as 4".

Madness, I'm 100% sure yours were neither paired nor looking for a breeding partner during the time they weren't exhibiting distinct barring. There's also the possibility that they weren't sexually mature. But by your own admittance you did see faint barring prior to 6-7" mark. Just not distinct.
I raised 2 sisters to 11" and their barring would occasionally fade in but remained mostly faint. Neither of them took on the consistent red/orange base with black barring until they were moved into a 350g tank with a large male. Then it was Game On.

The O/P's female is already red/orange and is bar-less. She doesn't even have faint vertical stripes.

jag123 your female also is already in breed dress and she has shadow barring towards the back of her and a small line on her forehead. If a male she's interested in comes near or a mate those shadow bars will become distinctly bold and black. If she makes it to full size she'll most likely end up looking like Balton's female with a few bands around the rear half.

In America we call them Red Terror and Red Festae. In parts of Ecuador they are affectionately called Vieja(males) rojo tigre(females). Rojo Tigre is translated Red Tiger. Can anyone guess why?

The fact that this is a 3 page thread about Festae barring says to me that it matters. Even if some choose to pretend it doesn't.:shakehead

Lets see that male that's always barred, Madness.
Reason I ask is because there are times when a subordinate will mimic the opposite sex as a defense reaction. In addition a dominant female can and will act like a male when there are no dominant males around.

If he is a tank alone I can see him showing bars all the time. Males will do that when alone. But with tank mates, especially those who are his subordinates, he'll lose those bars unless he spawns with a female. Then he'll keep them while spawn tending.

Barred Red Convicts, I love em all, Festae Fever, my new male for my prized Female:
