Festae Breeding Advice

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
remove the male once the frys hatched he will eat the frys little by little

I would remove the fry before removing the male. IMO if you want to raise out the fry, move 75% of them to a separate tank. I always leave a few with the pair to strenthen the bond.

i agree with everything jk has said in this thread. congrats on the spawn. festae are my fav and rule all

I always leave the fry with the parents. They seem to grow faster when the parents raise them. I have never had problems with parents eating fry or turning one ach other.

I will keep an eye on him, so far he hasn't been a problem. He just sits in the corner that the females on and hasn't harassed any fish at all like she does.

I plan on removing some of the fry to a couple smaller tanks and setting a few other tanks up along the way. I was debating on leaving some fry in with the parents and now that you said this, I am going to do it for sure.

Thank you. I remember seeing true red terrors four years ago around when I first got into the hobby and have wanted some ever since. When I finally decided to get some, I realized that they were not as common as they had been before. I think the anticipation of trying to get a pair and shopping around for them made me like them even more!

I would have left the fry with the parents if it wasn't for the other cichlids I have in the tank, I don't want them to eat em. I am going to see how the parents can hold off the others with a small percent of their fry still in the tank with them. If all goes well and they breed again, I'm going to leave the fry in next time because they take so long to grow in small tanks.

Might be time to start buying some more tanks!!!! Just be careful removing the fry, whenever I've removed fry early all hell breaks loose in the tank. Festae are very protective of their young and from what I've experienced with my pair, the male will hold the female responsible for anything that happens to the fry. Also should be no need to remove the male. Have never seen my male harm fry in any way. In fact he is usually the one crushing up food for them.

More tanks is the plan! I've put my hands in the tank to clean it recently and it wasn't too bad. I can imagine when they get bigger it will be though.

I'm still waiting for free swimmers, should be soon. This pic shows the male in the top corner, he's been doing this the whole time pretty much but hasn't eaten anything. The female will eat, and he won't. I thought the female was the one who doesn't eat? Is this normal?

Is she chasing him? If so divide them and try to pair them back out after your done raising the fry.
