FESTAE Ecuador vs. Peru vs. Columbia

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Most of the border between the two countries use rivers, so it's certainly possible for a fish to be found in both. However, all the rivers listed as natural habitats (at least the ones I could find) are all in the middle of the country, heading south towards Peru. Plus there is that rather huge mountain range between the rivers in the middle of the country and the rivers that form the border with Colombia. I would hazard a guess that festae coming out of Colombia would be a closely related species rather than the actual thing.

It would be interesting to know the geologic history that would result in festae...and its closest related relatives (ornatum and gephyrum) being on opposite sides of mountains...and whether festae evolved from the more northern species (or vice versa).

There is also the possibility of introduction by man. I've yet to find anything that says festae is native to Colombia...

Great perspective from Wayne Leibel: http://www.fishchannel.com/freshwat...ies-info/cichlid/red-terror-and-green-cichlid

Ex-C. festae was "Originally imported in the mid-1970s from western Ecuador (trans-Andean Pacific slope)"

the first specimens imported were huge 10- to 14-inch monsters that sold for between $50 and $100 in 1970s dollars!

Matt

that's about $500- $1000 translated to these days I think. That's a heck of a deal in those cichlid times I think. This day we have Festaes when we want them. Just not at the size we wish.

This is my pair. I don´t know were they are from. But maybe you guys can tel me.
The male shows more of a yellow/gold base then most other festaes I´ve seen and usually just shows baring during spawning.
The female has stronger red color then shows in the pictures. I don´t know why she always looks so washed out on photos.
