Festae....Female?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, I introduced what I believed to be a male as an experiment to assist in sexing these festae. Not after 5 minutes, the female completely changed! She displayed a VIBRANT Orange/Yellow with very pronounced black barring. The male went from a drab green to a bright yellow/green with various blue spangles throughout the body. The male is approximately 3" not including the caudal fin.

After about 10 minutes they began to circle each other with intermittent rubbing/nipping. They then retired to one of the rock caves in the tank. The male circled the female several times while "flashing" as the female rubbed against a rock. They have been chasing each other around and going back to the rock caves.

Are these festae's too young to breed? The behavior is there but would they be physically able to produce offspring at this age/size?

I thought it was a strange comment, lol, but whatever! If they ARE awesome, if they're not (doubt it) ...they're awesome! I have them in a 55G with one other female...for now. I'm having bad luck buying a bigger tank. I had 3 Sales fall through with the owner either telling me I've got it then selling it for more money or giving them to family. I've also been stalking CL but people want too much money! I could buy a brand new tank for the money they want for some beaters. Luckily these guys aren't too big yet. I have one last call to make tomorrow morning for a 110G ...we'll see how that goes.

Brand new home! Finally got a hold of a 100 Gallon for my babies....Not a bad deal for $51! :headbang2

Also, with the 3 Festae, 1 Pleco, I added a Red Belly Pacu (for now) the poor thing was cramped in a 10G with about 10 other fish! I'd rather have him be healthy and find a home for him than have him suffer in that shoe box!

Nice pick up definitely not bad for $51

This is "Tiny" currently about 2 inches. I've had it since he/she (leaning toward female with lots of spangling?) was quite literally only an inch. Tiny was bullied excessively in the small/overcrowded tank it was in and is now basically running the show in this tank. The only one that does not seem too bothered by it is the Pacu!

Note: I had to turn the brightness down on this photo so you could see it. My lights were on and it was one of those "hurry up it's sitting still for two seconds" moments.
