Um Sir, that pic you posted is 1000% NOT a Mayan.:headshake You're right about many LFS's not knowing jack about much of what they sell. But that comment also applies to the website your pic came from.
These are young Myans.

What about quality? Is it to early to tell?

No it isn't too early. Your last picture suggests an overshot lower jaw and an arc from from eye to lips. It's not as noticeable in the other pics due to the angle. Did you buy them as wild caught at 1-1.5"?

That's not a festae look at the bars.......

It most certainly is. Barring in Festae that young isn't always very distinct. And there are lots of in circulation with no barring even at larger sizes.

You could be right that was just my opinion I breed them for years and none of my fry came out looking like that but that goes back to the quality of the fish but I had a mayan when I first hot into cchlids back in 09' and they told me he was a festae I grew him out and he looked good but it was a mayan identical to his fish bit they may be festae....I'm getting some soon I have a breeding project I'm doing and I'm gonna post them....

Your right you can see the odd shaped head in the one pic. Does that mean it's trash?

OP what are you looking for when you say quality or trash?
