Festae grow outs

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Seems to be the big question these days.

"How do I keep my notoriously sibling-killing festae from doing what they are naturally meant to do?"

I have 2 in a 55 gallon and 1 is about 2.5 and the other just above 3, needless to say I am trying to find options on how to keep aggression down.... side note, don't try silver dollars... ha ha.

i put 5 in a 75 at about 2in they kill 2 had to move one all most killed him and today had to put a divider in one was trying to kill the last one so good luck they are little killers

Not my intention to hijack(along the same lines), I just see there are quite a few festae fry keepers here. So i just moved my 7 festae over to my 90 long. Thing is there is a 6-7" Synodonitis (Non-Featherfin, Petsmart Hybrid) in this tank? Are they in danger from him? they are about 2" a couple maybe 2.5". I don't think they will fit in his mouth they are probably 2 or 3 times bigger than his mouth. Just worried about his spines, weight, and suction if he gets mad or goes on a killing spree at night. He has always been kept with cichlids tho and shows little to no aggression. If he is being bitten sometimes he has swatted fish his size ith his spines. Only time I have ever seen him go nuts was when I tried adding a featherfin. HE WENT BERSERK AND THE THING WAS HALF DEAD IN MINUTES!!!

i have mines with some big fish and i was scared at first you will have to watch and see

cool man, thanks for the advice... i'm sure the syno cant outright swallow them... well +90%. i don't think he can catch them or outsmart them. i'm worried about when they sleep if he is up and starts maybe sucking or gnawing on them... I'm sure at this point they would wake up, run, and sleep in a more secure location.

anyone else have an opinion on this?

Yes I haven't seen any fish that is so aggressive and bold at such as small size, they more than earned the Red Terror name. Mine basically hate each other and spend all day fighting... it's truly funny... they also nip other (much larger) fish occasionally. But these are 1.5" babies... imagine when they get to 5" and are able to cause serious damage. :lipsseale Now I understand the "woke up one morning to find one festae and 10 dead tankmates" stories.

But aggressive or not I'm in love with them... they're one of a kind

Do yours school still? Mine are 2" and still school around the tank. Well 6 school and one looks like it is gonna die. They have eaten it back tail off and beat it whenever they can find it.

I'm not worried about the syno getting hurt its the other way around... He can take a beating he has been in with Salvini, RD, Jag, Loiselli... I think ill notice signs of torture before he is dead and separate him and donate him to anyone willing to get him(when the time comes!)

i have 7 (2.5- 3 inches growouts )in a 75 with two (3 inches haits)and i have had no aggression problems from the festae but a little aggression from the haits, will be moving all the festae to a 125 next month and probably selling the haits
