  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Yea they are mayans, never kept one before though. I was lucky to find festae. They are like alot of other sa cichlids though, just kind of drab in color. imo

Uropthalmus. No doubt. I don't know how many times I've seen them mislabeled at the lfs.

Mayans are CA, not SA ... though technically they would be NA/CA actually ... :grinno:

Festae are SA.

I have (had) a mayan that was sold to me as an RT as well and I figured it out a few weeks later. I gave it to my brother who has now had it for about 18 months in his 75 gallon. It is now about 7 inches and as of last week, it had killed everything put in the tank with it over this time span, including 2 -7 inch plecos, a 6 inch F1 red devil, 5 convicts and a pictus cat.

It killed all the convicts in one night (after having lived with them in peace for 5 months), the red devil the night it was put in there (after acting scared and in hiding from it for 5 hours) and the plecos in one night about 2 weeks ago. All of these fish had lived at separate times with the mayan. She was sneaky about it and NEVER acted the least bit interested or phased by the others in daylight or when someone was around the tank.

Since he is attached to her, it is safe to stay the little freak will now be living solo. :screwy:

Mayans grow to be mean...

Well they (3 @ about 2.5" - 3") are currently residing with 4 Amphilophus Xiloaensis from TUIC.
It looks as though I will be monitoring them very closely and moving them to thier own tank before they decimate my Xilo's. At this stage the Xilo's are dominating but I will not be taking any chances.
Thank you all for the input.
If there is anyone else out there who keeps these guys or has any additional info, I would appreciate hearing of your experiences as well.

Nice lookin Mayans, they will never look like breeding Festaes, but I think they have their own beauty. Mine looked like yours, actually more washed out than yours because he was beat up. I fed mine Hikari Cichlid Bio Gold, Tetra color flakes, lots of krill, and other stuff with Krill in it. Over some months, it brought out an orange glow that I liked, even though he is a bit damaged. I bought 6 young Mayans, anxious to see how orange I can get them. :)
