festae pairing question

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hm that's good info guys thank you. Will the male naturally outgrow the female? Or do I need another big brute male? I will try dividing them for awhile, any other suggestions?

Yes the male will natually outgrow the female. My current pair were about the same size when I put them together. Now he's a couple of inches longer than her and probably over double her weight and mass. How are yours getting along, are they fighting?

All great advice. What I have learned in breeding mine is that the female will not even look at the male if he is smaller and she feels that he is inadequate. I have a 300 gal with several amphs & cichs, all have pairs, but all my females want the large, robust, good looking, Hogaboomarum. They wont give their own species a look. The only way that I got my wild caught Devil to spawn, was to remove him until he was bigger than the females, introduce him into the community, allowing him to show off and challenge for top dog, and then remove him and her. It also helps to change up the tanks and water. Since I removed my Devils I have had 2 spawns, my Hogas have had 2 spawns, and my Festae have finally spawned. But from what I've learned, she will not show interest in the male until the male is bigger and shows dominance. Sorry.

You should separate the male, bulk up your male and then re introduce him to the tank with a divider and let them pair up.

in my experience i definitely think the male needs to be bigger or the same size. what i find odd about the pair i have is when i got my second male, i divided them for three days then took the divider out and they paired right away and spawned 5 days later with no aggression, it just seemed to easy.

They don't seem interested in one another. She prowls around the tank looking for food and will peck at the male if he's in her way and he just runs with no thought. He isn't that much smaller than her but he only shows aggression to the severums they are a sharp looking pair, he used to be very picky eater now he'll eat anything im feeding krill pellets worms and frozen bloodworms

he is eating more because she is competition. i dont know what your tank status is so it may be easier to remove the female into a smaller tank for a month to allow the male to grow and bulk up a lil faster in the larger tank, that would also give him the advantage when you re-introduce the female to the tank as he would have claimed it as his own and be more territorial. you most likely dont see any interest because the male has already submitted to the female and the female isnt interested in the smaller male. I definitely say remove at least one of them for a month then try again. they may forget about eachother or at least re-challenge for territory and should show new signs of interest

Spot on. I did that with my male Labiatus. He was getting punked, daily. Gave him his own tank, introduced the female a month later. BABIES!!!!! The only bad thing is I think my male holds a grudge against all females now. He spawns with them and then boots them to the curb. He then takes care of all the fry from then on, not letting her near them.

That is what I would do. Remove her, let the male become alfa tank ruler, and reintroduce a month or so down the road.

Just because they are male and female does not automatically mean they will pair up. All you can do is wait it out. At least they are not beating each other up.
