Festae- Quality VS Trash!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Whats this hobby coming too!!!?? I have heard and seen wild caught festae hit the market that come in with orders from asia. Now im obviously a small voice but a voice to be heard nontheless... Its looking like the wholesalers and distributors are buying them up like crazy at dirt prices and who can blame them? But come on, who is gonna believe that theyre actually wild? thats the biggest load of crap ive heard. Im guessing the wholesalers are making them wild ecuador, peruvian or whatever so they sell which i totally disagree with. Its complete mis-representation of what is supposed to be true!! I apologize, i take alot of pride and love of festae to lay down and watch them get murdered by trash!!! So whether im right or wrong i felt the need to voice my opinion:) So here coming very soon to an LFS near you will be Wild Festae Trash!!!! I cant stop anyone from buying them cause people will do what they want, but please keep this thread in mind when buying festae especially when theres plans to breed and sell back into the hobby:)

J Nice....Tell them how you really feel....LOL...

Rapps has f1 festae that are a much better option so for those in search of festae that like to go through a vendor that is a source you can trust to be quality.

Jeff says his are real Festae, that's all. He never said his Festae are F1 nor does he say the parents are his. You are putting words in his mouth. Just post his link and let the ad speak for itself rather than misquote him.

There are a few people on this site and others that raise/breed very fine Festae stock. There are also those who didn't care for them but suddenly became Festae suppliers/breeders during the recent shortage when they realized there was an opportunity to cash in on the popularity yet scarcity of the breed. :bling:

Just think for 1 minute. Why is it that everyone offering up F0 Festae only have 1-1.5"? It's almost impossible to distinguish true F0 at 1". In the past when they would occasionally pop up on lists, 3" and up is what was offered. Never these 1" snacks.
F0 Fesate seekers need to know that Festae and most other Cichlids that are actually collected from their native habitat never come in looking as fit and healthy as those currently being offered as F0 in the hobby. In the wild they are highly susceptible to parasites, and resistant bacterias as well as environmental hazards especially at 1". When they hit our shores they are usually in rough shape. And many of our OTC remedies have little affect on some of the maladies they bring with them. Additionally Festae collection has always been seasonal in nature. These 1" fingerlings seem to be available in endless supply. Hhhmmm.

Oh jeez you are right I could have sworn I saw them labeled as f1 but I just checked and they aren't. Sorry for the confusion but I still stand by the fact that his pair will be a quality fish and fry from them should be as well.:)

Your zeal is commendable but a bit misguided.
You stand behind the fact that his pair will be a quality fish? Really? How do you know this for a fact? Do tell?

Young fella,:shakehead reread the part where Jeff says "parents of available fry". Again, Jeff makes no claims about the pair being his.
Good looking parents doesn't always equate to great fry. Ask FWP.
Jeff is highly recommended by many of his patrons/clients, but only he can stand behind his stock. If these particular fry turn out looking like Quasimoto wi/Toucan Sam beaks:crazy: due to a genetic anomaly or something, will you still be standing behind them as quality fish?:headshake
Comment on what you got from him that you were pleased with and leave it at that. Almost everyone in the hobby knows who Jeff is.

I say it because knowing Jeff he is not likely to blindly sell fish from someone else unless the parents are pretty special. And therefore his are just as likely to turn out well as fwp or roadrunners. I was never bashing their fish so I don't see why you are so defensive about this. I have said they both have excellent stock and that if I ever got more they were who I'd hit up. And yes even now that Jeff has some. I like that they have some that are grown out to a larger size verifying their quality. That certainly is something that Jeff can't offer as of yet. But do you really think that someone with the presence in this hobby like Jeff is just going to jump on some festae just because he can sell them? He is not that type. Now is it impossible for some of these young fish to turn out less than excellent, no, just as it isn't for Anyones fish to have an anomaly. That's nature buddy. I agree with you that the best verified sources probably are fwp and r.r but believe it or not some people don't like to order from hobbyists. They like to have a business to stand behind the sale even though both these guys guarantee their fish just like Jeff does. But for all those people that are out there that want to order from a vendor, IMO this is your best bet at quality as fat as I'm aware.
And as far as the snide remarks you made toward me I feel it's you that are probably the young fella that needs to slow down. Do you know me? My age? I doubt it. You only look like a fool acting like that and I doubt any of the true youngsters will look up to that kind of behavior. Remember there are lots of eyes seeing these posts so keep it civil this is a great thread with lots of good info, let's do our part to keep it open:) I read that Jeff had festae in on Monday and for some reason that I don't know I swore that I read they were f1. I didn't assume I genuinely could have swore I read it! Guess my mind wasnt as sharp as I thought it was that day. I apologize if that confussed anyone I should have re checked before I posted. Now back to business all that matters is that there are sources to get these great fish if people know where to look that stand a pretty fair chance of turning out to be just what you dreamed of! Much like your gorgeous male!

All you can do is ask questions...

Oh really, wild fish from all over Mexico? And for remarkably little money for big fish. Do tell how you exported them here... It's a secret. Right...

People who sell pond-raised fish as wild are screwing over more than just the people who buy them.
They're hurting the people who actually do have fish of provenance and want to know what's in their lines.
And they're screwing the people who do actually import wild fish...and have to answer question after question about why they're selling smaller fish for more money (than the guy who selling Florida pond-fish as wild)...

Matt

Yeah I know... Too bad something can't be done on a whole for all species.

Yes, thank you. Its very frustrating for me!!! and you are very correct, "Ask questions" And for those that buy these coming in, please ask questions and grow them out. i would like to think that with these large numbers coming in that there should be some very nice specimans. if and when difformities are seen please do the right thing and either cull them or keep them if you like but please dont spread any of the fry around:)
