Jason was talking about my Festae (obviously not bred by me) when he mentioned the deformed mouth pointing downwards and all other deformities

Here they are at 1", 2" and 3"

I'm not seeing the deformities that you are talking about. What exactly about these fish do you think are deformed?

FWP, Maybe they are not your ideal festae but I'm just not seeing what you are talking about. You have said numerous times that you now know what festae are supposed to be and what deformites to look for. You said you learned this from talking to some experts/people with lots of festae experience. Please point out what you are talking about because I can not see it. Also who were these experts and how exactly did they determine what a festae should look like? Have they collected festae or at least imported festae from numerous locations to even know what they are looking for?

In your original post you implied that a vendor is selling misslabled trash festae that are deformed. I assume you are talking about cichlidsoftheamericas.com?? That is the only person I know of selling small festae labled as wild. Have you talked to him about this? If so any response? Could it be that the collection location he has just look different then what you wanted? Other then having a lot of them to offer how have you determined that they are not F0?

Sorry to see that this discussion has become so personal.

I may not agree with some of Jason's concepts, but I would never question his fishkeeping skills, or his integrity. Sorry that this discussion took a turn for the worse, but if nothing else at least some people will now be aware that like all cichlids being bred in captivity, not all festae are created equally.

BTW Jason, you'll know when festae are truly HOT when they start churning out albino festae out of SE Asia. lol

NOt to muddy the waters...but if you showed me these photos and asked what they were I would have said, Uropthalmus and not Festae. The front lateral bar doesn't form a distinct "y" with the second and the eye spot in the caudalpeduncle is much larger than normally seen in Festae. As for "deformities"...I don't see a one. I've been wrong before. Just saying what it looks like.

You sure cacichlid those arnt mayans? From the pics it looks like a full dot by the base of the tail and not set at the upper portion.

This is what you would call a "Generic" festae i guess. I have no idea where it comes from or how far out of the wild it is , I picked it up at my LFS one day. Is there any " deformities" on this fish? I really do not know what to look for and it really does not matter to me, im not breeding it or anything, he is just a cool fish that I enjoy. Most of my fish are from good trusted sources that im pretty sure of their origin. Festae all look so different from their pics , I could not honestly tell what is a ideal specimen.

If you go back to the original thread where those photos were posted, and look at the entire group as a whole, it should be pretty obvious that they aren't Uropthalmus.

Not the best/distinct markings that I've seen on a group of juvie festae, but they are indeed festae.

Those are exactly the pictures I saw...and I don't think it's "pretty obvious". To me they look like Uropthalmus. The eye spot is much larger than what you would see on Festae, the body shape more torpedo.... Like I said, I've been wrong before...this is just personal experience for whatever that's worth.

Here's some of mine:
