Festae- Quality VS Trash!!

Since 2008 I have acquired F0 festae of varying sizes from at least 9 different sources including Rapps, Sharke, & TFD to name a few. 2 groups were Peruvian lineage. None of which bore any of the deformities currently being displayed in the hobby. From the early to mid 90's, RR and I ordered several boxes of F0 Festae from Ecuador. Quite a few of them came in with environmental issues such as parasites, battle scars, nipped finnage, and sometimes permanent damage to their dorsal/caudal. But none with with genetic deformities. See following videos for examples. The 1st video is where 75% of my F0 from the early 90's came from. 2nd video is what smaller sizes looked like upon arrival from Ecuador.

Funny thing is that first video was probably the first festae video I saw when I started researching them years ago:) goes to show exactly what they look like straight out of the wild. More than one species was pulled and they all have very similar characteristics. I would have loved to get in on those orders too;) oh, BTW those tumbes pics you sent me look so much better than the tumbes i see now!!!

The 90's, boy, boy, boy! Those were truly the festae days for us. Airport runs for boxes of festae strait from Ecuador. Ecuador festae lives on through the N.O. It's a good thing Ecuador is in my house now.:)

Simply amazing on their stunning looks! It is by far within the top 3 sought after species for breeding in my area.

Yeah, they're gonna be the new convicts here in the NW pretty soon. :)

I haven't chimed in on this thread yet but I've been following it. Lots of great info, thanks to everyone who contributed.

Firstly, great thread anyone who has contributed. Festae owners are gaining lots of info for sure. But have to agree with you aclockworkorange on their gaining NW popularity. Personally, I know more Festae breeders than I do with convicts. It really should be the other way around.

I've found that convict breeders rarely refer to themselves as convict breeders. Lol.

Festae deserve all the popularity they get, and more. If only they were as available as convicts over this side.

I'm surprised no one has started a web forum devoted to festae. Kinda like the ones you see for Frontosa or even Oscars. There are certainly enough people out there whose interest in cichlids goes no further than this one species.
