First off, I have been following this thread for quite some time and still am a little unsure as to the purpose of it. Most of the comments have been sly digs at someone or another.
Anyway. As far as I am concerned, festae are like any other south or central american cichlid out there. Sure they are colourful and have a lot of personality... But so can Oscars. I don't see the great fascination with them vs anything else. I should point out at this point that I have never owned any festae. So it may be that my opinion is bias.
However, I believe that the demand of this fish plays a large role in what is percieved as quality. For example - until fairly recently festae were considered rare, especially in the UK. So most people paying large sums of money for a fish want the show stoppers (like many pictured on this thread). Which isn't always going to happen. Especially when some (not all) breeders will grow out the largest batches of fry to capitalise on the want for such a fish. Meaning some people will get a bum deal and end up with fish which aren't as high quality as others.
I think eventually the commercial pet stores will begin to carry festae and it will be a similar scenario to as is with the Green Terrors (gold saums). Whereby 1 in every 100 turns out to be a showstopper, the rest are labelled as average or 'have potential'. This is when the ones bred by people like jason will be in higher demand and at this point I think they should be labelled as high quality.
I have had a few chances to own festae but have never bothered. Not for any particular reason. Just I think festae will become and are becoming too popular and will soon become so popular that every other person has them. Now, it is not for the rarity that I own a fish, but I believe it is quite good to own a fish that not many other people do. I believe once they get extremely popular, then another fish will come around the corner and their popularity will drop.
People want what other people don't have and once other people have it they no longer want it.
I know that's a very stereotypical way of looking at things and at people but thats what I forsee happening.
Finally. I make no bones in telling someone what I think of their fish. But I believe if people have only ever owned one specimen of a species they will not take too kindly to it. For example: if I were to own a festae with okay colouration, a beak and a humpback - but this is the only festae I have ever owned and someone like jason who has owned, bred and sold tons tells me that mine is of inferior quality. I am going to instantly say that he is only trying to sell something and that he is wrong. Whereas if I owned two festae of different colouration, body shape and facial structure then I would be able to see the difference.
I think that all fish species in the hobby have varying quality but even what is percieved to be the lowest of quality by one person may be anothers dream fish. Take for example blood parrots - I and many others likely think of them as hideous looking fish. Whereas some people love them.
I agree with what you are doing jason in trying to provide the best festae for the hobby and I totally support you in doing so. But frankly, your not going to change the world. People are always going to capitalise on the demand for a fish and sell poor quality fish. So there is always going to be this quality vs trash divide. Every other fish have and festae are no exception. Its the way of the world.
